phaser question

I'm looking for a phaser that can do a very slow and deep phase.

I have an mxr phase 90 (non script), it's not right. Main problem is it's not slow enough. Not sure if the honky mid boost works great either, though I sometimes like it.

I can't afford an expensive boutique unit right now, so I'm hoping for something I could find second hand at a reasonable price here in the UK. As there are hundreds of different phasers out there, do any of you have a recommendation? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Paul

KInd of a tough request.

For slow, you want the Whetstone.

It's not cheap though. So, that rules it out.

You can try as many phasers as possible until you find one slow enough.

You also may be able to find someone who can mod the Phase 90 to make it slower.

I did wonder about modding the 90. Most mods seem to touch on other attributes though. Maybe changing the value of the pot??

what budget and how slow?

My budget would be around £50 right now. As far as speed goes, significantly slower than the phase 90, around half that speed might work. I'll be playing very slow music, so the slower the better

For £50, I think your best bet would be to just get your Phase 90 modded.

I don't know how much slower it can be made to go though. Look around on the DIY forums and I'm sure you'll find that info. You should also be able to find a UK builder who's willing to do it.

You can PM Scruffie here. He may be able to help you.

Used Grand Orbiter? Kind of in love with it lately.

If it ends up being a mod to my p90, I'd be confident enough to diy. I haven't heard of any mods that fit what I want, but I'll scan the forum dome more.

I'll look into the grand orbiter, thanks.

Has anyone used the dod fx-20b? Any good?

Don't think the dod goes that much slower. Scruffie and Ian (GigaheartsFX) are legit UK diy guys who could help with modding.

Not aware of any mods to slow down a phase 90 sorry.
Out of your budget but the v4 Lovetone doppelgänger and the clones I offer go extremely slow with the slow switch engaged. Around 16 seconds...
Kinda like the Ada flanger uber slow wide deep sweep. Sounds killer.

Actually, you can also do something cool to make the sweep 5 minutes!

Here's a trick to expand your Doppelganger2's LFO 1 sweep time from 16 sec. to approx 5 mins, 35 sec for LFO 2 and both LFO's on the original Doppelganger, the model without the slow

Solder a 1.5 megohm resistor into a mono jack plug (i.e. across the tip and sleeve contacts) and insert that into your Doppelgangers' Pedal 1 socket, selecting "slow" on your LFO switch This should yield a very slow LFO rate of approx 5 mins per cycle. So make two jacks to hear your DG in a new way!

also with a clean or dirt sound?
i dont think you'll get a grand orbiter for that price but maybe look at the boss ph-2
its 10-12 stages instead of the 4-stage of the phase 90, so its a lot gloopier/stronger phase effect, and a phase cycle of down to about 14 seconds.
you can also crank the resonance extremely high

That sounds like an awesome mod, Ian, thanks.

Really, there're no mods to change the rate on a Phaser 90? I would've thought there would be. :idk:

@ Rats-eyes -

I would very strongly recommend the Visual Sound Garagetone series 'OIL CAN' phaser. It's an analogue phaser. Very 70s sounding phaser. Great sound; great price!

I dunno how the speed compares with a Phase 90 though.

Or try to find a used Akai Intelliphase. They don't come up often on ebay though.

Also investigate a used Fender Phaser (reissue) - they can be had affordably on ebay. I might even sell you mine.

All of the above are proper analogue phasers.

build a Phase 45 clone for slow stuff. Or get a Grand Orbiter.
