I'm trying to get a clanky/choppy overdriven bass tone (like SVT on steroids). I'm not looking for full-on distortion or fuzz. Someone told me the Pork Loin can do it, but the demos don't sound as aggressive as I'd like. Any suggestions? I'm not looking for anything super expensive.

I use a Rusty Box and a Mini to get a similar tone, but that combination brand new will set you back about tree fiddy. One or the other would probably get you pretty close, but I highly recommend both.

the DOD 250 sounds like something you might like?

I know of the Rusty Box but what is the Mini? I thought about getting an OD250, but would probably need it modded to retain the low end.
Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried a bunch of guitar distortion pedals (DS-1, Tonebone, MT-2), and I couldn't hold the low end even with a blender loop pedal. This other Pork Loin demo I watched was a little better, and that thing may actually get the job done. I guess I'm looking for a King Crimson "Red" type tone without buying a vintage Hiwatt. I'm using a Diabolik for fuzz.

ive got this with a fuck instead of the mini
clank for dayssssssss
get a mini
That's a pretty tasty tone you're looking for there, duder.
You'd probably have luck with the Rusty Box -- I don't know if you know Shellac, but Bob Weston gets a pretty grindy tone -- not quite the same as Wetton's Hiwatt but similar feeling: check 0:36 here:

The 250 will also get into similarly Lemmy-esque arenas, but stock you're going to completely disappear in the mix.

If you can find a Hardwire CM-2 used, snag it and give it a try. It has a lot of low end, sounds really sold, built really solid, can be had for ~$60. It doesn't have a ton of gain but it doesn't look like that's what your after anyways.

If it's low end you're looking for in a bass OD, peep the IdiotBox Blower Box.

Yeah, I love Weston's tone. I'll have to check out the Rusty Box. I have to assume it's based off the TS-50B preamp? Luckily, I already have a tube amp so it's just a matter of getting the right dirt. I can't play as well as Whetton so I don't expect to sound as good. Will check out that Idiot Box as well. Thanks.
I had an EQ pedal running in to an old Tonebone through a blender loop. It sounded amazing alone but it couldn't cut through a mix at all. That's why I bought the Diabolik. A Brassmaster cuts through any mix. I like EQD stuff for guitar, but tried a Hoof and it didn't have much for lows. The Monarch does sound sick solo.

Yep literally the TS-50b pre in a box
Never liked my Rusty Box as an OD just because it has way too much of it's own character. Some people like that of course but when it comes to ODs I prefer it when they're an extension of my amp and fuzzes.
As a pre amp however, I think for what it is, it's agreed upon that it's fantastic.

Sounds killer. I could really use one of those with the gain down...I worry in higher gains though it doesn't have enough definition, and would get drowned in the mix. Any body used one in a band context yet?
