Vintage MIJ lap steel with two gold foil pickups. Going to have to fight the temptation to part 'er out. Rings like a bell, warming up the Traynor now to see what she's like under dirt.

Looks fantastic. I've got a Guyatone console steel. They're great.

Double edit: I've gotta train a cat to use the pickup selector.

Gonna need to find some screws for the 'neck' pickup

I doubt I'll part her out, but that kind of thing does cross my mind. Thankfully it was cheap enough that I can justify now having two steels in the house.

One of these days I'll have to find/buy/build(/convince Kurt from Rondo into getting China to make) a decent cheap 8 stringer

It's awesome, but 8 strings is 2 strings too many for me on a steel. So, two necks with 8 strings each is way way too many.

It also weighs a ton. So, it'd be wicked expensive to ship. It sounds great and is totally solid.

Do those cost a pretty penny? I have much desire for a lap steel.

Perhaps ones with gold foils may, but you can still find vintage lap steels at very reasonable prices.

I'll keep the offer in mind, but I already have too little dinero and even less space. As for the number of strings, 6, 8, doesn't matter to me at this point. I'm using the steel for drones, grinding amateurish blues noise, and stress relief.

Steel is cheap to get into. $120 to Rondo gets you a lap steel in either a mahogany/stratPU or ash/P90 config, carry bag, and legs to make it free standing.



The Rondo's a pretty well regarded - much more so that most of the few other new cheap ones out there - but you can also go vintage for very little money. Granted, I got lucky, but the gold foil was less than the cost of a new one from Rondo. All in, two vintage lap steels both with original pricey/valuable pickups, some finger picks (that I've never actually used), a tone bar, shipping, I've put out less than $400...
