I actually don't know anything about flangers. I was just trying to be funny. I have failed you and myself.

Someone here will have some insight I'm sure.

My guitarist rocks a Hartman analog flanger and it is seriously good. Everything from jet plane sweeps to lush watery atmospheres a la Robert smith. And some nutty vibe sounds too.

Way better than every other flanger I've ever heard.

We need to get Goroth in here. I think his love of flange might approach his love of fuzz.

My bandmate built a BYOC analog flanger which he decided was too dark for his rig, but I snatched up. It sounds sooooooooooooo good on bass.

I also had a BF-2 modded with better delay chips and a detune/unlatch switch for all sorts of pitch-shifting craziness. That one's lots of fun.

Best ones Ive used (and hence keep):

Lovetone (zonks cray cray)
ADA (looongest sweep)
79 Deluxe mistress (sounds unlike any other, the classic sound of the police et al)

the Foxrox paradox is awesome but mega fiddly. tbh I kind like the EHX hoax for thru zero if its that one trick ur after, rather than £1000 on the foxy..

you can do that with the lovetone and a exp pedal.
you can also make it do just the frozen flange sound like a mistress, then move the flange with your foot

tis awesome

Tis true, and you know it!
(thanks bro!)

But to the question at hand: This is impossible to answer without knowing what you want to do with it.
Digital Flanger: Dr Scientist Bit Quest, clean mode, with massive positive feedback. It's like if a Small Stone birthed a flanger.
Chorus sounds: Boss BF-2B
Leslie: Boss BF-2
All-rounder: MXR EVH flanger. Plus it looks all Van Halenish and has a Van Halen button. And it just sounds good all the time. Electric Mistress and it's derivatives are nice, but the EVH MXR is just... nicer.
Step Flange: Digitech Turbo Flanger, or Subdecay Quaser. Both are nice.
ADA style wackyness: Ibanez Airplane Flanger. Seriously, if this thing was in a smaller enclosure it would be on my board 100 times over. Great analogue wackiness. Cheap. And Paul Gilbert.

Otherwise, all of Gigahearts' suggestions are unobtanium in my neck of the woods, and I can't save up and buy them because I keep accidentally buying fuzz. So they're on my list for being expensive and potentially rad. And Ian knows his shit, so there's that. Also wouldn't mind trying that EHX flanger hoax.

But mostly, flanging flangers. One set slow, one set fast. Boss HF-2 into BF-2 = subtle but not subtle. Yet totally awesome.

Hmmm I've never messed with a meatball before, but unless you got a clone the metaball plus espression pedal would put you in the same price range and take up more pedalboard space. I mainly like this one so I can go from heel down to toe down during a build and then click it off back to normal, sounds sooooo fucking heavy.

I'm thinking the smallskull / bigfilter in a wah enclosure will do exactly what I'm looking for and way cheaper though. :yay:

Toad works also has an expression capable flanger. And I think the subdecay dlx can do it too. But neither of those are in a wah shell.
