Things to make a bass NOT sound like a bass.

Howdy y'all!

So I just got in a new band playing bass where I'm playing fairly normal bass, but I also wanna play bass a bit more unconventionally. Namely take the Castrovalva/Lightning bolt route and make my bass playing sound really gnarly/crunchy and unusual when the song calls for it.

So is there any effects y'all use that would get that sort of sound? Maybe amp choice as well? Its worth mentioning that I have a fair amount of fuzzy weirdness already going, but I wanna hear what y'all use to make your bass sound distinctly unbass like.

So school me. :snax:

MOOP.

Lighting Bolt is Whammy, Boss Octave, 2 Boss Overdrives, and a DL4.
Personally a Filter would get you sounding weird

I use my Infanem Second Voice and whatever fuzz I'm feeling at the moment. Still retains the bassiness but can also do some nasty synth noises or ear-splitting shrieks.

I suspected the Octave came into play somewhere in there. I remember playing one a long time ago, and comparing that sound to what I heard from lightning bolt, its spot on.

What would be a good cheap ring mod to grab? Admittedly I've never played one so I'm inexperienced as fuck with them.

a fuzztone would be cool. I've also been considering a EQD Terminal fuzz causeof how saturated it is.

Y'all must really like that Pitchfactor! I always hear it recommend for bass stuff.

Get a Green Ringer clone. That would sound gnarly as all hell on bass. Just EQ the fuck out of it.

I played a minifooger MF ring today and it was pretty fun. Not really cheap though.

I swear, one of these days I'm gonna get a Pitchfactor. And I'm gonna factor the fuck out of some pitches. Pitches love being factored.

Question: Anyone ever try a rangemaster on bass?

Would probably cut out all the bass, right? Might be good as an occasional thing. Loop a bassline, kick on the range master and play tasty leads.

That's what I was thinking. I play bass pretty untraditionally, sharing both rhythm and lead duties with the guitarist. Something that could help me cut would be fun. Or just say fuck it and have it going all the time. :joy: Was thinking of having skully build me one, kinda want an amp top one tho.
