I'm looking for something suitable for a gnarly black metal band, sonething that can get its own drive and distortion, but is receptive to dirt pedals too.

My budget is 600 bucks max for the head at the moment. I'm considering the 5150 after playing with one recently. Also looking into weird Ampeg 80s Marshall copies. Maybe even a fender roc pro?

What would y'all suggest?

If want a tight gainy sound and are on a budget. I'd suggest looking for a deal on a 6505. With the right cab and guitar you should be in black metal heaven.not sure how well it handles pedals. Most peeps I know, don't really use pedals through it.

I've been going on a lot lately about the Peavey 120/120, but seriously consider going the separate pre/power route, Peavey shit is very affordable on the second hand market.

I'm kinda thinking about going the combo route too, do you think a combo would suffice for this kinda stuff ?

I have been seeing more 6505 combos than the heads recently.

All depends on what yer up against

If yer bassist has an 8x10 no. Drummer hits hard, prolly not.

But regardless that combo only having a single 12 I can't see being too loud

What about the 2x12 5150 combo? I feel like 60 watts is pretty decent amount of watTage

If it's anything like a Twin Reverb, 2x12 should be more than adequate in regards to volume. Granted those are 80-120 watts but it doesn't sound like you need an insane amount of headroom. 60 watts is prolly a good middle ground but I have very little experience with that amp in particular.

I use 2 15 inch cabs being driven by 240 watts, and my guitarist's 60 watt super sonic with just one 12 keeps up fine, you'll be fine with the 1x12 version but I would definitely go for the 2x12s to be safe.

I'd say yep! 5150s are awesome. They are back breakingly heavy though. Dunno how well they take fuzz. My rig didn't sound at all good through our old guitarists 5150 but I didn't change any of his settings or mine so

Verellens are probably a little loose in the gain structure for metal. They probably work great for doom but I've heard from a number of owners that they wouldn't work as well as a more traditional high-gainer.

5150 2x12 was the first tube amp I ever owned. I'd say it'll definitely work for you. Didn't use dirt pedals with it because at the time I was mostly playing death metal and grindcore and just used the dirt channel. I say go for one!

For some reason the fender roc pro is really enticing me right now. 124 for a head on guitar center used. Yngwie approves of them, too!

5150's, in my experience, don't take pedals very well, not compared to the $2000 Verellen amps mentioned for some reason. They would be perfect for what you're describing though.

For a 'knarly' sound, a Fryette would be perfect, but they're slightly out of your price range, so I'd suggest a Jet City HDM100, Laney Ironheart or GH100L, Blackstar HT100, Marshall DSL or 2203KK, Mesa Boogie F100, ENGL Fireball, Bugera Trirec, or maybe a Framus Dragon. Some of those you will be hard pushed to find at $600, but it's possible. Also, the Boogie, GH100L, and maybe the Blackstar and DSL100 might need a boost to really get cooking. The rest have enough gain for most genres.
