Thats great and all, but when I tell my gay friends "dude, a new state legalized gay marriage!"

"Iowa!"

Both responses are in order, Devi.

The truly stunning characteristic of the decision was that it was unanimous. When the CA court handed down a similar ruling last May declaring Proposition 22 unconstitutional, it was by a razor-thin 5-4 vote. And while the text of the CA decision was eloquent in its own right, it pales compared to the emphatic tone coming out of Iowa yesterday. More like, "WTF are you people thinking? There is absolutely no compelling state interest to ban same-sex marriage. Now go away and let them live their lives."

...Finally, the Court determined that "civil marriage must be judged under our constitutional standards of equal protection and not under religious doctrines or the religious views of individuals." The Court was careful to acknowledge the state constitution's guarantee of religious freedom to solemnize marriages according to religious values.

In the meantime, the once great California Republic continues to sail off into the sunset of cultural irrelevence  while the rest of the nation (Go Vermont!) -- and the world -- (Go Sweden!) lurched forward this week.

Someone asked about the latest on PropH8: The CA Supreme Court heard oral arguments a month ago challenging the validity of PropH8 and whether it should be classified as an Amendment or Revision. They are expected to render a decision in the next 6 - 8 weeks, but the general consensus is that they will uphold PropH8 while continuing to recognize the 15,000 marriages performed before its passage. How's that for equality? This will of course open up the door for an avalanche of lawsuits and the battle will rage on.

And yet more wishy-washy drivel from Team Obama. Talk about your Spare Change.
The Messiah Of The United States wrote:The President respects the decision of the Iowa Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage. Although President Obama supports civil unions rather than same-sex marriage, he believes that committed gay and lesbian couples should receive equal rights under the law.

Pretty badass...

Now, if only a state in the South could pick up on it...

California is dumb. I broke up with her months ago.

Connecticut? Iowa??? What's next? North Carolina? Alabama? hahaha no but seriously California should really catch up, they're soo ahead in everything else...
It's still really awesome, but the point remains: for gay couples living outside of Iowa, how many would really want to travel to IOWA to get married?
Psshhh I live in Toronto we're MAD OGs in this area
