Ah, I'm originally an artist before a photographer, so I have a bit of fun with it. But I understand where you're coming from. Although I'm studying to be a photographer, I have way too much fun with making abstract images. However after buying my girlfriend a Holga and reading the book that came with it... I'm really excited to get one and start my first 'real' photo class.

But honestly, I just strongly dislike it because I find it so mothafuckin hard to use! And then, with digital in=mages you can never really "trust" them now.
I have a studio in the basement, THAT's where my art happens.
Holga = best camera EVER!

Well I'll be the first to say you can never trust my images, but I mostly use it for graphics like signatures/banners for my band and what not. Also, people take pictures of me with camera phones....and I have to edit it in photoshop so it looks decent and not pixel-y before I post it anywhere.

But overall I'm a lazy person, I'm either playing guitar or near a computer.
I really hope tog et into a dark room though, when I took my high school photography class my teacher decided THAt year to do digital photography.

So all the photo II and III students got to be cool and I had to use a powershot camera which had way too many settings. The honesty in a manual camera makes it super simple to teach according to the college professors I've talked to, which makes a lot of sense. I like to keep my digital in black and white all the time just to keep from worrying about settings and other bullshit.
I'm making my girlfriend buy me a holga back, haha. Do you think the teacher of a beginning college photo class would like me using such a camera? Or would they kind of assume "oh this kid thinks he's hot shit...."?

My professor wanted everybody to use a 35mm, but thought the idea of limiting yourself to a Diana (very much like the Holga) was great.
She said it allowed one to focus more on imagery and less on gear and gadgets.
Of course she always used a Hasselblad.
I did do a couple of assignments with a box Brownie with a bit of success.
I'm a big fan of 127 film and all those strange cameras that were made for it.
I kind of believe that Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz, or Robert Mapplethorpe could have used a Holga and produced images that would have the rest of us saying 'woo'.

My photo teacher almost came on me when I told him I was getting a Holga and a Diana.
He's like you can borrow mine!! Then, you can borrow my personal Rolliflex (best 'serious' camera EVER, Avedon used it.) Then he's like you can borrow all my other weird photo stuff!!
But if you're gonna get a Holga, get a 120N, the 120S are very nice and the original ones, but the 120Ns are the second model up and have alot of ther basic problems fixed, and still have that wonderful plastic lens. I hate flashes too, so the 120N doesn't have a flash.

Thanks guys, I guess i'll risk looking like a hot shot and go for it. After all if they don't want to teach me with a holga I can just learn by myself.
