I want to put a guitar pedal under the pickgaurd of my jazzmaster and although, at first, I thought I'd use rechargeable batteries but now I'm looking at a solution involving using an XLR or TRS cable to run both audio and 9v from/to the guitar.

Anybody have any experience doing this?

You could ask BilT guitars how they do theirs. THeir guitars have onboard effects that are powered by a pedal you put first in chain on your pedalboard and use a TRS cable from guitar to the pedal. THe pedal is plugged into a standard power supply thing.

Bonus - it *CAN* be done so now it's all about finding out how.

Someone far more knowledgeable as me might correct me on this, but I'm pretty sure a TRS should do. One lug that just passes the guitar signal, the normal ground lug should always connect to the negative terminal of the powersupply anyway and then an extra lug to connect the positive terminal of the power supply to the guitar. Connect ground of the pedal to ground lug and where the positive side of the power supply enters the circuit to the extra lug and you should be set.

Then again, I know shit all about building pedals and stuff so I might very well be wrong, but I've thought about this myself before and this is always how I imagined it would work.

If you can find a way to power the pedal using the regenerative friction of your hand sliding up and down the neck, that'd be swell.

I have no experience in this field but you would be looking for an active DI box so you can run phantom power to your guitar with a TRS/XLR cable, right?

It would probably be a lot of effort just for one onboard effect, but good luck! There shoouuuuuld be plenty of resources on the net. There's also that 'P3 phantom power system' thing that never really took off.

Please, don't bother with phantom power or XLR Cables.

A friend of mine did pretty much exactly what you want to do for his active EMG pickups.
TRS Cable
Tip: Guitar Signal
Ring: +9V
Sleeve: GND

A small (1590A) Pedal first in the chain where you plug your guitar in that has a 9V jack, maybe a LED for power indication and maybe even a switch to turn the +9V for the guitar on/off if you plan on switching guitars.
Output is a normal TS Jack with Tip: Guitar Signal and Sleeve GND.
Done.

I'd do XLR just to avoid potential bad hookup nightmares.

I had a DOD Performer-era "Phasor" with a 18v 1/4" plug that I lived in fear of accidentally plugging into an amp or something it shouldn't.

Wow, ILF really is a great place for off-the-wall ideas. Most other forums had no response or I had people telling me just to run two cables.

In any case, I'm thinking XLR (same contacts as TRS) would be the way to go and here's why. On the guitar I'd still keep the regular output but I've have a second jack on the guitar which would be the input for the Freeze. I'd then have an XLR out jack mounted on the side of the guitar. So if I want to use the guitar normally with out the Freeze, no worries - no special box/cable/etc required. Since I'll need a special box to provide power anyways XLR just makes sense to me - it keeps things separate in my mind too.

Also, about all the trouble for using it for one effect... if this works out, I plan on modding more guitars with built-in effects.
