I'm looking to get a bass in the 200 range. I'm really looking at the squier jag basses, are these any good? Any other things for me to look at?

The Squier Jag is a very good option. Any of the Vintage Modified or Classic Vibes really.

I have a Squier VM Jag, and I use it as my main practice bass for everything that doesn't require a 5th string. I love the pickups, they are super loud and when cranked, they can get so loud that they distort the input of pedals and amps alike. So I usually keep both volume knobs rolled back a quarter turn or so. The neck is on the thinner side, like a jazz bass. And on the shallow asthetics side, I love that I was able to get nice block inlays and a matching headstock for such a low price. I think it's pretty damned hard to beat for the money.
Here's a pic of mine. Please ignore how fucking filthy it is, I had just finished like a 5-hour practice session learning like a dozen new songs for my covers band

These reasons are many of the reasons I am leaning towards the vm jag. I love my classic vibe tele and really like what squier are putting out nowadays. I can do rosewood unless its got a matching headstock. I just cant decide if I want the short scale or not.

If you do want to go short scale and you can find one, check out a Hondo Short scale P bass.
I've played two (own one) and both were fucking killer. Got mine for $140.

If you're willing to consider P-basses, I also highly recommend Squier's Matt Freeman sig p-bass. It's a fucking amazing bass for the money, I liked it better than the Fender MIM P-basses that GC had on-hand that day.

All the Squier Jags that come into Guitar Center need a set up, but they are pretty rad, especially the active one. Personally, I'd save up for a Sterling Sub bass. The active EQ on that guy really impressed me.

I really Love my Squier Jag Bass... It's short but it still sounds like a big boy and I can fuzz it out and play chords easier...
The tonal rage with the pickup blend and tone is sick...
Or get a Bass VI...

I love the t-40 too, but there's no way he's getting one around 200. For some reason in the last 5 years, t-40 prices have exploded and they almost all go for at least 400 now. I got my t-40 in 2007 for about 250, and then a year later, all of a sudden, I saw them going for 400-500 on eBay.

Yeah I agree with both of you. They've been popular recently. They are still pretty great for the money, used to be amazing for the money.

My main bass is a Squier VM Jazz bass. Has been for years. I've had a number of mods done to it and it's even more incredible. The biggest thing was replacing the pots, wiring, and pickups. After that, I'd put it up against American models and it'd crush them. Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound J-bass pickups, new pots, mogami wiring, and a Leo Quan BadAss II bridge...she sings. I love that bass.
