NUTS. Take Me To Class

Got a Japanese Fender Jazzmaster that is in dire need of a new nut. The G string is cutting too deep and buzzes now. What have i been missing in the world of nuts. I use thicker strings, 56-12, so it must be able to accommodate a thicker gauge.
Are Fender LSR Roller nuts cool?

Ok, I'll bite.
Nuts are a pain in the ass. To make a bone nut and slot it and get it to the right height is more labour intensive than you would imagine.
Prefab nuts can be ok.
I don't know about roller nuts.
Finally, the superglue and baking soda trick really does work.

Yeah, if it's an issue of being cut too deep, try that baking soda and super glue trick to build it up. Easy as pie.
As far as string guage, the nut must be filed and slots widened appropriately to handle your preferred gauge. This is a job for a competent tech if you have no experience or the required files to do the job.

I just wanted to say...don't ever get the slots started on a bone nut using a Dremel.
That smell.
That smell...

i love love love the lsr on my strat. every custom trem i order will have one. however if you like thicker gauges lsr is not the way to go. its hard to fit thicker gauges in their. anything above 10 is pushing it. and it hates 10.

I like the lsr roller on my Strat Plus too, but wouldn't recommend it as the nut slot of the guitar would have to be modified to accept it.
I've cut a bone nut before, hard work and yeah it smells something fierce.

Things I know about nuts....
BIG BRASS BALLS!!!
erm, I mean, try metal nuts.
A needle file set from home depot, greatly assists the birthing of nuts.
Beer.
Buying a feeler gauge for spark plugs and then making a saw out of them helps with thinner cuts.
Sawsall blades that I grind down on a bench grinder make quick work of brass or alum for the wider guage slots, only good for getting close as the grooves they leave are ribbed for pleasure on the bottom. TWSS™
Do not, under any cicumstances, pound on your nut with a hammer.
It will not have the desired result.
