Need Bass Amp/Cab Advice

It looks like I'm going to be joining a thrash metal band playing bass. I was planing on using my rusty box as a preamp/direct box. My question to you guys is what amp/power amp would you guys suggest for me to look for on the decent but cheap route? I was thinking a power amp and a 4x10 would be a good starting point but I want your suggestions. Thanks!

If you are digging the tones from the Rusty then yeah that is a good route. I would look for a Carvin DCM series power amp or a Crown maybe and for a cab I prefer 2-12s to 4-10s personally. A bit bigger bass but still has good punch. For a solid budget cab I would go with Avatar.

Def prefer 12" and 15" speakers for bass.

You should also check out a used music equipment store near your state university and prepare to haggle. I recommend a 2x12 + 1x15. If you buy two cabs, you get more leverage with your haggling :thumb:

So how much power would I need for a 2x12 and 1x15?

I'd go with AT THE LEAST 300w depending on how loud the rest of the band is.
It's always better to have more than enough power if possible.

For power it depends on how deep ypou want to play, the bassier you play the more headroom you need. My bassist plays very deep, so deep i had to build him some cabs tuned in the 50hz range, and he uses 1000w and was barely able to keep up with 450w.

I will add that the avatar b212 is great and can be found cheap on CL. For amp you can still get away with picking up something like an Acoustic 370 or so for under $300.

Agree on both fronts.
