I don't know if people have always done this or if I've only just noticed it but I see more and more people playing guitar through bass amps.
Why do people do it? Is it to achieve a certain sound or something? Is it just bassists who can't afford a separate guitar rig? I must know the reason

I play through bass amps so I don't have to have two separate setups. Although one of my cabs has a more full range bass speaker and the other one has a more bass voiced come with a little bit of roll off

I use bass amps with guitar cabs for guitar because I prefer clean headroom and volume over amp gain.
It's also convienient because when I want to play bass, I just switch cabs.
It definitely saves money but my main reason for doing it is the toans.

I did back in the day with Bassman heads, but well, those were always really just guitar amps anyway. But you couldn't give them away and they sounded like Fender clean, which is what I want the vast, vast majority of the time.
Now I just play with whatever makes me happy.

I've never had a guitar amp and I play guitar primarily. Bass amps are loud, clean, can easily be used for bass or synths, and seem to be able to get more loud for your $ than guitar amps.

In my jam space I usually play bass through my solid state bass head & cab, and guitar through my JCM900 half stack, but for live shows I just bring the bass amp and play both through that... way less hassle, and I don't want to be that guy that has to change rigs when he switches instruments... I'm not a good enough musician to justify that sort of thing.....

I'm starting to want to buy a really nice bass amp to play guitar and bass through.
Mostly to save money so I don't have to have two different rigs.
I don't mean to hijack the thread but any suggestions/tips to get a good guitar tone out of bass amps?

Pick a more full range speaker when you look at bass drivers. I always recommend the Delta Pro 12a from Eminence. Pretty wide/full range and sounds great on guitar with out much/any high end roll off or bass-type scoop

Yeah speakers that work well for higher frequencies are important, a lot of bass speakers get really dry and icepicky and unpleasant when you run guitar through them.

it's the only way to fly. All guitar amps sound like little baby toys after pushing an 8x10 bass cab. Or, better yet, and 8x10 and a 1x15.
