Is it supposed to have good sustain? I bought a used one (version 1) and it chokes on the tail end of notes. That doesn't seem right.

Octave fuzzes often do have a sputtery release (huhuhuhuhuhuh).

They're sometimes helpful.

I've found that using a boost before an octave fuzz can often add a little sustain.
