it sounds like console eq or some kind outboard mixing to me, .

found this but i think its the guitar tone in general, or perhaps the main fuzzy bit

"The signal chain was a Colortone fuzz pedal into a DI, into a Vortexion mixer, into a Neve 1064(boosted around 3k, 10k, and highpass filter around 45Hz) compressed with a EAR 660. They call it the "hooligan tone"!"

played live he's using a more obvious auto-wah/filter sound

I remember seeing a bunch of his pedals photo'd and he had a couple of cool things from Maestro and EH, including a bass balls which has a wierd throaty kinda sound like that. But I think its likely something else... live I think he used a conventional auto wah. In that vid above it sounds like a mutron III or a EH Qtron

The fuzz sounds awesome,. Apparently it was a mk2 tonebender

Fuzz is a B&M Champion Fuzz, which is essentially a re-badged Colorsound Jumbo Tonebender - very close to a Big Muff:

Sounds absolutely killer. But those filter bits are interesting - almost sounds like a talk box at times. Agree that the live clip sounds like some sort of envelope filter - a 3Leaf Proton (Mu-tron clone) will definitely get that sound, but it's different to what's on the record.
I'd forgotten what a good song this is. He really plays the shit out of that riff.

Very impressive indeed, especially the live clip, he definitely plays the shit out of that riff there.
The Bassballs might actually be a good call, you basically need two different filters for these kind of throaty vowel type of sounds I think (the Bassballs has just that if I'm not mistaken), the Aguilar Filter Twin and Sonuus Wahoo would probably work as well, or that Mooer Bass Sweeper if you're looking for a cheap alternative.
Funny, that fuzz doesn't sound much like a Big Muff to me, it's much more clear and kinda razorblade like in the highs in a cool way, great sound. :)

i don't know what the filter is or what fuzz he's using on the recording, but at 2:19 in the video it looks like an old deluxe big muff.

On the studio version, that fuzz is totally direct into the board.....It's the only way to get it so "in your face"....

I always thought it was a maestro filter sample & hold on the studio recording

yeah, i think it's that maestro filter.
fucking hot track.

edit-im not sure why the filter registered in my brain, but i remember it from years back. maybe the pumpkins used it on a track or something. it's got a unique sorta thin sound. i have had a couple mutron III's, it's not that.
the live clip is something different tho.

Everything about that performance was awesome. One of the best live clips I've seen, regardless of genre!
