"post-rock" that doesn't sound like traditional "post-rock"

Okay bear with me here - I'm not talking shit here, just looking for some new sounds - I'm looking for (preferably instrumental) music, played by bands, I guess the closest definition would be "post-rock" but something that doesn't actually sound like it's just aping Mogwai, Russian Circles, etc.... like, are there bands that play instrumental music (composed or improvised) that eschew the very standard and frankly at this point somewhat unoriginal ideas that typically go:

Loud/quiet/loud/LOUD LOUD LOUD then OMG it's quiet again part now this part sounds like it's from a movie now this part sounds sad now this part sounds kind of happy oh wait it's LOUD AGAIN then quiet then LOUD)

I realize I'm basically being an ass and saying "a lot of this stuff is boring" and I can sum it up with one sarcastic comment on their dynamics but I'm trying to find something that may have passed over my radar - I will listen to any and all suggestions if you have anything that might jump out from your end....

#sort of reference points: SYR Sonic Youth / Nadja / Zidane era Mogwai / MBV sort of but without vocals? / #vague #sketchy #hashtag

Hmmm. Interesting challenge. I'd probably put And So I watch You From Afar down there.

Perhaps Maserati? They tend to focus more on the grooving side of things.

Likewise, perhaps Zechs Marquise would be up your alley?

Depending on how heavy you're feeling, Bongripper?

See this is why I need suggestions - I was looking at last.fm last night for bands I may not have heard and said "there is NO WAY I'm listening to a band called And So I Watch You From Afar" because I am shallow and superficial and reject things outright based on names or what have you. I will listen to all of these when I get home, thanks!

Haha, I know how you feel. I've been digging my way through this same challenge lately. Honestly, there's not a whole lot out there that fits this bill. Makes me want to start a band.

Not sure this's exactly what you're looking for structurewise (these bands are dynamic and sorta typical), but I love it:

Giant Squid is the shit. They aren't instrumental, but check them out anyway.

 I love this thread.
Been looking for the same thing too. I quickly get burned out on the "like dis if u cry evry time" sentimentality-sentimentality-sentimentality kind of post-rock.

Definitely ASIWYFA, they're a great band.

Vessels maybe? Vessels are sweet.

See, now I'm an old fart, but when I think "post-rock," my first instinct is to go back to the groups that popped up in the wake of Tortoise... dubby/quasi-jazzy stuff...

(All right, this has vocals, but they're kind of submerged/subdued - a lot of other Ganger stuff doesn't)

Zach Barocas (ex-Jawbox) has a new(ish) project called BELLS≄ that kinda works in a more angular version of that mold:

You'll notice I put "post-rock" in quotes because it's very open to interpretation..... Usually it means "stuff like Mogwai/Godspeed" so I'm looking for stuff outside that categorization.....

The Six Parts Seven were sometimes described as "indie post-rock." for whatever that's worth.

I'm just starting to work my way through these links but the Maserati is basically exactly what I'm looking for, right out of the park. Thanks for that one. I would have thought it was a fancy Italian car so I'm glad for the suggestion. Cheers.

So obviously I recognize saying "suggest me some instrumental music" about as general/broad in scope as saying "suggest some rock music to me" so not all of this stuff did a lot for me - I guess I have a pretty narrow idea of what I'm looking for but thanks for the suggestions and please keep them coming if anything springs to mind....

However, I will generalize and say that a lot of these bands have some of the worst names I've ever heard. I keyed in Mazarati to my last.fm and under similar artists..... wow.... these are band names

Goonies Never Say Die
I Hear Sirens
What The Blood Revealed
You Slut!
Because Of Ghosts
This Is Your Captain Speaking
From Monument To Masses

I guess these bands might be to your liking as well:
Electric Electric (Sad Cities Handclappers): http://electric.electric.free.fr/flashm ... layer.html
Gallops (Gallops): http://gallops.bandcamp.com/album/gallops-ep
Ozric Tentacles (The Yum Yum Tree): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7NuHpH-kNo (Paper Monkeys): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AotZI3l3UY

If you like Ozric Tentacles you might want to have a further look into the realm which is usually referred to as Space Rock, if you like the other bands Math Rock might be something you could look into as well.
Great topic by the way, there's lots of cool suggestions here I didn't know anything about! :thumb: :)
