TC Electronic Nova Delay, Fulltone Fulldrive 2, Volume pedal for swells. Or at least, that's what all church guitarists use.

so its like part of what's acceptable and expected? i'm not trying to make fun of anyone, a girl i knew's older sister was in a cult and they all had to wear the same gingham dresses.

But he'd be playing them through a custom white Dumble.
Crystal lattice harmonics, folks - heaven don't mess around.

Every church guitarist I've ever seen has had a delay pedal, an overdrive or two, and a volume pedal. The ones I mentioned are the ones I've seen most often. Occasionally guitarists will use more dirt or wah or some other modulation, but delay and light OD are their bread and butter. I'd say I "expect" a lead guitarist to have those main things. But really, most people at a church who aren't in the band won't know the difference whether they're playing through pedals or not. A lot of it is personal preference on the musician's part.
For instance, I played bass in a church band for a couple years. I played a lot of 7ths.
Most bassists usually just play pretty simple stuff, but even though I played a lot of weird things, no one who wasn't in the band or a musician ever noticed, and the people who did thought it was cool or funny. I don't think I ever got criticized for playing funky stuff. So most people just kind of do their own thing.
For most lead guitarists, "their thing" ends up being really similar to "everyone else's thing".

That's cool. Is that a paying gig? When I went to church as a kid we just had a organist and choir and they played hymns and everyone sang along in a pretty monotoneless manner. That organist gave me my first piano lessons.
I realize there are big church's with bands now, what kinds of tunes did you play, or is it.....? i don't have any idea what you might play? that secret chord that david played and it pleased the lord?

The church I played at, I played for free. I was in highschool and I wrote it down as service hours on applications and stuff. Most churches pay their bands though. I had a friend who made pretty good money playing at a couple places.
Contemporary Christian music is played on the radio a lot, and that's what people like, so the christian music you hear in church is the same christian music you'd hear on the radio. The band "Hillsong" is really popular and we played a lot of their songs. Most songs are I-IV-V. It's pretty simplistic and formulaic music, most people just care about the lyrics (which makes sense in a church setting, I suppose).

I've installed stadium equivalent speakers and mixers and broadcast booths in some TX Mega-Churches... It's a big deal here, every Sunday is a Soft Rock concert for Christ... Old guys treat it as a club to see and be seen by other local businessmen, not sure how serious they are about the message but they take the Rock and the snacks afterward pretty seriously...

I don't get the culture of "praise and worship boards," but then I don't care for the notion of having to have a certain pedal to play a certain style in any case, be it doom, post-rock, etc. I use what I like and what I think sounds good in the context. This is coming from someone who does play regularly at a church.
That said, I think you see a lot of really similar setups because, in most cases, these players are simply recreating a tone that is very common in the style of music.

I know a Pastor that also plays in the church band, he's in his mid 20's I think and uses two DL4's at the end of his chain (one looping, one delay) into an Orange Tiny Terror combo for his church services. Actually he had a Malekko Phaser too. The one time I went they did a lot of interesting takes on praise songs. Was actually pretty close to post rock which was pretty cool. Was nice to see some smaller names on the boards

Yeah, I think you said it best here. There aren't necessarily standards or expectations, but there are a lot of pretty similar setups that aim to do a similar sound.
