What's your experience with echo pedals? Any favorites? Must avoid at all cost's? Digital vs analog? Dude they are just delay pedals called echo? Nah man marketer's don't pull that kinda shit?

I've always used an 80s roland analog echo dc-10. Real subtle and warm. Dimed i can get a strong attack but the repeats get exponentially quieter. I also use the echo settings on my tape delays, but i'd rather wear down the tape with delay duties.

Just curious cause I keep seeing all these pedals labeled echo. What gives homie?

edit: guess I answered my own question...an echo is just a marketing term to sell more delay's.

so how about them reverb pedal??

I use and will probably always use my subdecay echobox although that's just the name, I think it is categorized as a delay pedal

I don't think there's technically any difference between echo and delay, but it seems to me that they way most people use the names ends up being:

Delay means clean repeats, either digital or a really clean analog

Echo means really dirty repeats, like either a tape unit or one designed as a tape sim or something like that.

yeah, that sounds about right. i wonder if these echo pedals are all under 300ms too.

I've tried almost all delay pedals in the market, and only keep the Boss RE-20 on my current pedalboard. They called it tape delay, but when I opened it and found there's no tape in it a piece of my heart cried

Yeah, i always associated 'delay' with unfiltered repeats and 'echo' with filtered repeats.

As for echo pedals, my favourite is the Strymon El Capistan. I haven't tried much uber-bootek expensive stuff but that works perfectly for what I do and sounds nice to my ears.

I thought Strymon was uber-bootek expensive
they digital though right? i guess all reverb pedals are digital?? other than spring.

I wouldn't call it expensive compared to analog stuff like EAR, JHS etc. that are more expensive with half the features (but obviously have tonal qualities that most people prefer).

And yeah, it is digital. As much as I love lush analog cave echo certain things aren't very practical when it comes to pedalboards

you know, I keep waiting for the gristleizer to be available....again? their delay looks mighty tempting too, but i'm focusing on new fuzz textures now.

pedalboards......the bain of most incredibly awesome kickass gears existence.


edit:.......although, if i can find one for 20% off hey! everyone could use a couple delays.

you may want to try an rv-3 or an earthquaker devices dispatch master. reverb and delay combined.

I've got the eqd disaster transport that I really enjoy. its under 30ms to 650is ms. so i guess it does echo too. i mostly enamored with the modulation control over the repeats.

I'll have to check out the dispatch master then, every other eqd pedal I own is quite the work of sonic art.



edit: that's a new BOss pedal to me , but they are always solid and sound great. thanks for the rec's

Empress Superdelay

My favorite pedal for that sound was probably the Boss DM-2, or the Dr. Sci Donny Day Delay. Both have a wonderful quality to how short repeats just kinda melt away.
