EHX Iron Lung - great but appalling!

I heard the EHX Iron Lung the other day, and it blew me away. Just a guy playing through it with no mic input or anything. One of their Nano series, I loved it - except...
WHY THE FUN DO THEY CALL IT 'IRON LUNG'??!!!!
That's just utterly hopeless! How can they be so 'on it' - and then, at the last moment, quite clueless? With dull murky graphics too.
Sorry to be here slagging off another pedal company (who pretty much rule in my world). Why didn't they call it some neat electro name and make it more 2001 Space Odyssey/NASA design? I'd have ripped it away from that bloke using it and left the shop with it - wrapped up in an EHX T-shirt....
Ya feel me?

Isn't that the basic EHX story in a nutshell?

I don't get it. They're obviously playing off the fact that vocoders are usually used to process vocals, and it makes it sound like a synthetic voice, so they're making a pun, calling it the Iron Lung. I guess I don't get why that's hopeless or clueless.

I dunno. To me, 'iron lung' reminds me of Iron Maiden (which has variable amounts of coolness), and something big, heavy, clunky. I know they're thinking robot>metal, voice>lungs. But to me vocoders are all about clean electronic textures, 'futurism' from the 1980's, cool french pop, all things electro, Kraftwerk etc.
But hey, what do I know? They've probably sold billions of them, and the world loves a good iron lung. I'm about to buy the pedal myself - but I'll rehouse it and make it look like an accessory from the spaceship in 2001 when they're travelling to the stargate.

You're right there!
(But not in a good way)
I didn't think of that Radiohead track... It's got a nice Whammy/glitchy octave up sound, but no vocoder, I think.
Maybe I should be working for Electro Harmonix!
I met one of their electronic designers. Apparently they use freelance guys who approach them with a circuit, and say 'well, what about this?' and if EHX likes it they buy it off them. He had an air of Hunter S Thompson about him - which was very pleasing!
I can't even go near that new 'talking' pedal with no moving parts... I'm sure I'd give up immediately...

Is that Woody Creek From Iron Maiden massiv or the anti-EHX crew? Shall I put the kettle on for them all? I don't think I've met Woody...

Woody Creek is where Hunter S. Thompson semi-retired to in Colorado around '68 or so.

Oh right! Then all of Woody Creek and their libertarian friends are very welcome!

Also, when I think of an Iron Lung, I tend to think of the actual device.
