Favourite speakers for low end dooooooom?
I've done a bit of reading on speakers recently, but you know how it is, reviews often seem tailored to strat-blues guys. I've used the same Orange 4x12 for years now, and although I'm very happy with it I've been wondering what the opinion is here on Vintage 30s.
I like the volume, and the way they both take fuzz boxes well and project well in a band set up. I've heard - haven't we all - that old greenbacks are the holy grail, but wondered whether lower output speakers would have enough grunt.
Also, where do you stand on mixing speakers? Anyone got any experience on this?

I really REALLY always suggest the Eminence Delta Pro 12a- it's a bass speaker BUT it's got a huge frequency spectrum compared to most bass 12's that tend to roll off some highs. It's got a really awesome amount of cut to it and I use it for both bass and guitar. 400w, you can get them for around $120ish a piece. I've got a second cab that has a Eminence Delta 12LFC which has more thud to it but rolls of highs- the two speakers together though sound WONDERFUL.

Dave I dig Fanes (and fane clones). I run them mixed with V30 clones and 65 clones. So mix and matching middy speakers with the fanes which are bass heavier without a strong mid cut

I love black widows. I blew a cab's worth of V30s with high volume and an FZ-2, replaced em with a mix of Widows and Eminence Legend 1258s and it rules. My other cab is a quad of G12T75s and I've got no complaints there either.

that's interesting, Nick. I was thinking about pairing the Peavey Sheffieds I got with some Fane clones. Not sure about the Weber model or the Reeves Vintage Purple though. Preferences?

Lady Lucks and Swamp Thangs for 12" and Legend 1518s for 15" are my favorite

EV 12L's. I run them in 4x12's and 1x12's and they sound huge and can handle thick fuzz or crisp cleans or cutting rhythm tones too. I'd like to try mixing them with some "foggier" more vintage sounding speakers so I can get the perfect blend but I'm very happy with the EV's. With a cranked power amp and a good fuzz they're far from the sterile reputation they sometimes get.

As far as 12's I run Marshall 65 clones. I've got both the Weber clones and the WGS clones, and I'm starting to think I kinda like the WGS's more.
But if you've all ready got some Peavey Sheffields those are my second all time favorite speakers. Back when I bought my first half stack I had all kinds of options as far as cabs (vintage marshall with greenbacks, oversized mesa, etc) and I still bought the cheapo Peavey cab because I genuinely thought it sound better. I'd follow nicks advice though and pair the sheffields with some fane's or clones there of in an X pattern. Should compliment each other nicely.

Ron runs all V30s in his rig (curse the son) and it sounds killer through all of his Mesa cabs. At minimum it is a very consistent setup.

Hey nitro

I think im gonna have to add Green Berets to that list, one of the v30s i planned on putting in the 6x12 has a torn cone so last night i tested out how Green Berets mix with the Lady's and Swamps and the result was pretty damn awesome, they get pretty raunchy under fuzz and downtuning

Plenty of food for thought here, cheers lads. I'm thinking I might be best sticking with the Orange as it is , but maybe look into a second cab and do some mixing and matching. I like the idea of those bass 12 inchers alright.

Thanks, man. I've been pondering it for a while, I think I'll go down that path eventually.
Been rethinking the rig I wanna move towards, and I'm gravitating towards keeping it smaller but trying to maximise the sound as much as possible....I won't hijack this thread, but I might bring it up in the DR, get some opinions.
