School me on tremolo

I've had amps with tremolo and it was cool, but can't you get the same basic effect with a killswitch?
Why are some trems $30, and others are extremely expensive? What do they do to your sound?
I'm in the market for a trem pedal because I miss when I had my AC30 or TR. I use it for an intro in one of my songs

You can't really get the same thing with a killswitch, for one thing it's tiring and annoying and also it's a 100% sharp volume OFF whereas most trems have variable depth. The more expensive ones tend to have more features or are overpriced, I don't really know a lot about them actually sounding THAT different, so if you just want to check it out do what vidret said and pick up a boss/EHX. Both are pretty solid sounding and cheap.

I've been scoping out the EHX pulsar actually. I'm just looking for a light touch.
Think this song: (no speakers at work so I hope it's the right one. Should have a nice trem tone in the intro)

Hmm.. I don't think there's a trem on the intro, possibly a wrong song?
Btw, you can't go wrong with the ehx pulsar or the wiggler. Another good ones are the boss tr-2 and pn-2 (great for stereo panning!).. or even better: the Boss SL-20 fucking slicer!

The most expensive trem have different wave shape... can be set with a tap tempo... can stutter and stuff like that.
The best exemple would be the Goatkeeper... look for some demo on YT.
Personnaly, I prefer the basic amp style trem.

The Mooer tremolo is a copy of the Demeter optical tremolo pedal, which is really, really good for amp-like trem. Lots of DIY info for that circuit, too. For super cheap, people like the Danelectro Tuna Melt, too. The Behringer trem/pan pedal is an electronic copy of the PN-2, which is supposed to have a really good impression of Vox amp trem.
If you want square wave madness, though, like the Kay trem or the Vox Repeat Percussion (Spacemen 3!), you're not going to get it through the garden variety sine-wave stuff. The stereo Pulsar and the TR-2 will do different wave forms, but I don't know if they'll get all the way to hard chop. The Earthquaker Hummingbird is a great sounding modernized Repeat Percussion. If you need wave shape control and tap tempo, the Seymour Duncan Shape Shifter is pretty affordable and seems okay.

Tremolo is fun, right up there with delay. As for the price difference between something like a Seppuku Repeater and a Goatse ...
Demo thing by a guy named Dalton ...

Will need to try the Tremulust one of these days... it's Tom's favorite creation!

The audio path of a tremolo can make it sound and work very differently, optical is very clean where as a FET may have some distortion (hopefully pleasant) OTAs... have their sound.
A FET can switch faster than optical, so you can have harder squares and faster rates, optical has an intrinsic delay to it as the LDR 'catches up'.
If I recall an AC30 is not optical... I can't think of any good FET based ones off the top of my head so a BOSS TR-2 or EHX Pulsar are probably a good bet for tremming.
Of course... you could go nuts and get a FuzzHugger Tremulust

I came here to say TREMULUST!!! It made me love trem...
As much as I like classic amp tube trem I've never really been a trem pedal guy... The Tremulust changed that... Two lfos, a blend between them, a depth and speed knob, the option of square or triangle on one of the lfos plus the modulation of the other lfo and the vol equals a KICK ASS TREM that eats Teh Fuzzz!!!

The Lightfoot Labs Goatkeeper is the monster of all tremolo's. You should get one and enjoy the ride.
Here's this cool analog Schaller tremolo

I use this for classic sound tones. just has a cool vibe to it.
