Go Ahead John ... PEDAL??

Hey fuzzers,I was always been blowed away by fuzzy solo by John McLaughlin on Miles Davis song GO AHEAD JOHN.
For me it was revolution in my mind, not just what was he played but effects that they were used...for guitar & drums.

Here's the song:
John's solo start at:06:37 min

"Thanks to the then-new wonders of noise gate technology, Jack DeJohnette’s drums and cymbals flit back and forth rapidly from left to right in the mix. With each switch, the guitar’s volume blasts in and out, over and over again, during McLaughlin’s relentlessly acidic solo"

I'm wondering is there a pedal with kill switch, fade in/out and splitter for making similar sound ??

voltage starved fuzz and a filter with a square wave sweep might sound similar?

I think the Fairfield Circuitry Unpleasant Surprise would do this nicely, but really any gated/voltage starved fuzz would probably get you close.

I'd most likely just use a momentary switch to get that stuttery cutting out sound.

Damn, that is good as hell! I think Unpleasant Surprise with a delay after it might get you close without any fancy switching effects. Throw a hard, choppy, slow tremolo between the fuzz and the delay for extra chop-chop maybe. Need to get that Jack Johnson box set!

Good call on the delay, Kosta, still think I'd stick with a momentary switch rather than a tremolo though.

I love this song. My uncle introduced my to this album my senior year of high school and it blew my little mind.

Whatever you use, I'd put the chop trem/momentary after the fuzz, as it's not going to sound the same pre-fuzz and lose some of the angular quality. Add a little verb post-chop/switch as well.

I can get some sonic destroyer stuff a couple steps past this with my Devi Test Pattern, but it's not this constrained.

IdiotBox made a momentary stutter tremolo, though apparently it's out right now - http://idiotboxeffects.bigcartel.com/pr ... sh-stutter

But from what I understand, the dude's great to deal with, and is always willing to talk custom work. Maybe you could get him to build you a fuzzbox with a momentary stutter trem section built in. That would be badass.

I just saw Diamond TR-1 tremolo and Chop Chaotic mode that make some great choppy sound like in the song...it could be useful, but I never try Diamond tremolo. (If Im gonna use tremolo after fuzz and before delay...like someone suggest)

I really want to get one of his orange cycles so I can run it into expression capable peds. Should work?
