Anyone play an electric twelve string?

I've been considering picking one up. Probably won't because I doubt I can justify buying one but here's what I've been looking at:

On an unrelated note I also think this is an incredibly sexy guitar as well:

I have one of the Dano Silvertone reissues like below (I think they recently started making them again too).

Nice and jangly but it gets used very sparingly and if it wasn't so cheap I probably would have sold it by now ;p

AxAxSxSx has a bunch of 12 stringers/octave guys, he should chime in!

I built up a 6 string octave bass, it's got 2 octave strings, one on the D and one on the G. Definitely beefs up the sound!!

I really like Dano's too I'll look into those.
And that's kind of how I feel about buying one; don't know if I'll really use it enough to justify it

start a 60s folk pop inspired band, then you'll get some use outta it

Oh, crap, that's a copy of a Magnatone Mark V.

I didn't know they were doing that.

A local shop stocks Eastwood, although none of their fancier stuff, just the basics (last time I was in there they had a P90 Special, Bighorn, Bobkat, and Twin Tone)
I've always liked their Airline repros.
They've all felt and sounded good to me but for some reason I've never pulled the trigger on one :idk:
The closest I've come to buying one was an Airline Coronado DLX a couple years ago, which I totally fell in love with, but ended up getting a good deal on a Godin LGX instead.
I really hope they get that Marksman 5 or a Sidejack XII or VI in though. Really want to try those out.

I've never heard any discussion about quality issues with Eastwood?
I'm pretty sure the only thing I don't like about Eastwood is their f-ugly logo

I've got 3 currently. The Eastwood would need locking tuners and a bridge that lets you intonate each string, probably a better nut as well. If you plan on using a tremolo on a 12 string everything needs to work flawlessly or you are in for some tuning issues. The Dano and the schecter posted both have individually intonated strings, and are probably better out of the box, but they cant go "BWEEEOOOOWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEE"

Best option for a trem equipped 12 out of the box is probably this dillion

Image

Mine now has alumitones and a brass nut, it's my main guitar. Only drawback is it does have some serious neck dive.

Or build one like I did with this strat styled one. Getting the bridge to work requires a donor dano style bridge and a strat bridge with enogh metal on the raised part the intonation screws anchor into in order to work with the saddles. the screws are located higher than normal strat saddles. Locking tuners are a must.

Image

the third was a chinese bigsby equipped 12 that I found on ebay. It's a rick clone and was not all that to look at. I refinished it, threw some lace aluma 90's in it, aadded a brass nut, locking tuners, new bridge with saddles for each string and rebuilt the bigsby so that each string had its own anchor point. then I stripped the top, removed some more wood from the lower cutaway so it had better upper fret access and gave it a ridiculous paintjob. the guitar NEEDED the work to make it a player. If you go this route I could also walk you through it. I would think the eastwood would need similar treatment.

Image

I also have an 8 string Kramer bass I brought back from the dead. this things a ton of fun.

Image

Bear in mind I don't use these for what people traditionally think of when 12's get mentioned. Mine get high gain fuzzed out tri amped doom tones and I find the octaves (jangle jangle) let me eq much darker than normal without getting eaten by the bass. I also make full use of the 24 frets on the Dillion. :hello:

Wish I had grabbed one of the early Dano reissues when those were out -- nice axes for cheap. The double-neck versions are pretty hip, too.

Now I'm kind of hoping Fender or Squier will do a decent Fender XII reissue or close, like, hell, a less fugly Venus XII. I do like the look of that Gretsch Electromatic, though.

Yeah, you should definitely make 'em an offer on it. Even for $400, that's not too bad.

I kinda like that funky violin bass to the right of it.
