vintage crap probably will hiss and give tone suck (true bypass loop?). Vintage doesn't always = better...try before you buy

As for boutique, go check out http://www.proguitarshop.com/ or http://www.tonefactor.com/ and watch their demos or just browse around http://www.analoguehaven.com/
Boutique for days.

You mentioned chorus and phaser...for chorus I really liked the redwitch chorus, and I have a dr. scientist cosmichorus which is just sex.
As far as phaser, I've never been a huge fan, but the Blackout effectors Whetstone phaser is coming out soon and looks very promising.

Funny - I just found my old EHX/Sovtek Small Stone in the basement yesterday. I had forgotten that I had that thing! :yay:

On the other hand, as I recall, the reason that it was down there in the first place was that I was having problems with it, and at the time, didn't have a dependable repair shop. I haven't tried plugging it in, but based on turning the one knob on that thing, I'm guessing the prognosis won't be good when I do get it checked out.

I'll have to see if it does anything when I hook it up tonight...

In terms of boutique-y stuff, I've heard really good things about the Nebula Phaser - http://www.tonefactor.com/proddetail.php?prod=Nebula, but have not had the chance to try one out myself.

i've never been a fan of EH gear so i can't speak on that, but let's not think that all vintage gear is crap. there's been crap made since day one and it still goes on today.... besides sometimes crappy gear just sounds good, partially due to it being shite. like that old plastic orange Kay Fuzztone.
