So here's a little recording so you know what I'm talking about:

It's only on the high strings, and it's most definitely not fret buzz or bridge buzz (there's a Mastery on this guitar). It sounds kind of like a sitar or something, but I'd like it to ring like a regular-ass note.
The guitar is my baritone 28" tuned, low to high, to FCGDAC.
I've tried to lighten the gauges of the high strings because I've noticed a similar issue when tuning with a high tension on other guitars.....but nothing seems to make it go away,

Improperly cut nut possibly? Other than that I would say a hump in the fretboard but I'd think it would be more pronounced.

It only rings like that when the strings are open. . . One of my other guitars used to do it, but depending on the gauge of string, it sometimes doesn't.

What gauge strings are you using? What's your action like? Can you post a picture of the tuning pegs?

My P-bass had some buzzing noise on one string (when played open), but I detuned it, pushed it down to the bottom of the tuning peg, then tuned it back up. Problem solved.

You probably need to get some string trees to increase the break angle over the nut.

That's the reason this worked.
By lowering the string on the peg, you increased the break angle.

I was having some trouble with high string fret buzz. It happened with open strings and then only on certain frets. Turns out I needed the neck profiling. It cost quite alot. It plays like a dream now though.

It's like MEC says - break angle. I put a string tree on my jazzmaster and it cured this same issue.

Hmmm. I haven't tried that yet. The tuners are three and three, though, not six to one side.... Maybe if I straightened the neck a hair and messed with the action? I can't go too low with the action, though, because it's my baritone and I need the clearance.

Could be height. A lot of players these days prefer low action and over time bc of vibrations etc the strings move closer to the fretboard. I'd do a fast setup and see if that kills it. Sometimes raising them even a fraction gets rid of that. But if a setup doesn't work I'd add a string tree like suggested.

I have a similar issue with a circa 2000 AVRI Strat. It started doing it from day one on the high E, once I went down a gauge. The tech said it had to do with the nut so he filled and backfield it, but warned me that if I started playing around with gauges it might come back. So after going to 10's-11's and back to 10's, I've got a sitar-like buzz on the high E when played open, but typically only on upstrokes.

Just dropped the guitar off to a tech this week so we'll see what the outcome is. Based on what I heard in the clip, my bet is the backfiling on the nut, though lowering the string angle off the nut by either winding the string lower on the tuning post or using a string tree might help.

cheap trick - oil the nuts with lemon oil or mineral oil
yeah maybe those too, make it an experience.

Yup, tuner side of the nut. I'm not a tech and can't explain how to do it, but it is something that can cause the sitar-buzz. When I get my guitar back I'll post the results. The tech worked at PRS for a while so I'll pick his brain. Don't know if he's gonna re-work the nut by filling and backfiling or just make a new one, but it's been my main niggle with that axe.

So I took a razor knife and very carefully, and slowly took a bit off at a time on the tuner side of the nut slots that were buzzing. The highest string is pretty much fixed, but the next highest one, the other culprit, needs a better break angle. I'll mess with the action and neck adjustment, but are there string trees that would fit on a three-three, Les Paul style head stock?
