Very much so. I live near and work with a bunch of people who work for the defense agencies. Before you can get a security clearance, they'll contact friends, aquaintences, and neighbors to make sure you're on the "up-and-up". They don't mess around.

The FBI has only recently relented on marijuana use being a disqualifying factor.

What about the polygraph interview?? Is that thing really used?? In spain they only use it in some talk shows to prove the love affairs of in-famous people...

No only during the interview, but it's also possible even after you've been there a while.

...but polygraphs only test emotions...if you get offended at a question, you spike, doesn't mean you're lying...
