I wanna get a little modeling amp for practice/noodling around in the house. Was thinking of a Fender Mustang V1, but wanted to consult ILF for an expert opinion.

What do you dig, ILF?

I like the Fender Mustangs, Vox VTs and Peavey Vypyrs. I don't like the Orange Crush or the Line 6 Spyders

The Vypyr has cool Russian Big Muff imitation and better built-in sounds for metal/hard rock. The VT and Vypyr series seem to take pedals better.

Had a Vibro Champ XD briefly and it was killer. They don't make that one anymore but they do make a Super Champ XD I believe it is called that is similar but with the added option of bypassing the modeling and just using the tubes. I think it's similar to the Mustang series except that it is a tube amp instead of solid state.

i just got a Pod HD and I'm having a fucking blast, for what it's worth.

and it did not fair well with pedals

The Line 6 halfstack is very nice. Its clean setting, stereo reverb and speakers are great with dirt pedals, in fact. At 150 watts, it's good up to about the volume a 50 watt tube amp starts sounding better. But you have a lot of options at that price and size.

My buddy bought a Line 6 Spider Valve as his first amp. While the name has always been off-putting I can't say I've ever been like, "Oh this sounds like shit."
We don't know what the fuck we're doing anyway so maybe we're too dumb to know but we've been able to tweak settings on it to our liking for a long time. It's also never seemed finicky coming out of any speaker. I guess that's a plus.

This was largely an aside since I think you want combo amps, practice amps, etc.

When it comes to any sort of modeling I've stuck to my iMac with Logic Pro 9 and now Logic Pro X. I also have an Apogee interface that works with the computer or iPad so I have the AmpKit+ for my iPad which is made by Peavey. I don't hate that either. All the sounds are passable for sending my demos to bandmates.

I have a Vox VT and it's okay, the clean tones work well with pedals at least.

Absolutely hated the Line 6 Spider IV, though.

Honestly, I like my old Peavey Bandit more than any modeling amp I've ever tried though, and it was cheaper than most of them.

Okay, I tried out the more recent Line6 SpiderValve Mk. II and have to admit, it sounds really damn good.

if i was in the market for this sort of thing, i'd probably get a fender mustang i or ii.

i have a vox valvetronix hybrid modelling amp, but it's a 'blue series' one and i dont know how the other vox valvetronix amps compare to it sonically.

oh, check what wattage any practise amp you look at can be lowered to. my 60w vox valvetronix can be lowered to 1w, 5w, 15w or 30w.

I played all three yamaha thr10 (the 10, 10x, and 10c) amps and really dug them. Something for every flavor of music you wanna play. Ive no need for modeling but if I bought one it would be a thr10.

Just be aware that line 6 stuff is basically a disposable amp. I've been inside one and what I found out was there are three boards inside, not really something you can work on unless you are good with computers. Only a "certified line 6 technician" can order a replacement board and they tend to cost more than buying a used line 6 amp does. So there is really no point in even trying to fix a broken one.
