little fucker with the original 8" speaker that sounds like construction paper.
open back, naturally.
you know, the tone from the layla riff.

well im probably not going to be going layla with it much,
a lot of old style boosts and old style fuzzes.

honest to god i have never mic'ed a combo amp in my whole entire life.

i'm gonna try and keep it off the floor, probably sit it on a chair.
or if it is suggested that i mic the back, i can get a stand of some kind to put it on.

max mikes i can use is 2. have an sm57, a nicer audio technica large diaphragm, a couple shitty mxl bullet mics that were 80 for the pair new.

been meaning to buy another sm57 for a purpose such as this. (had a 2nd one and it broke)

Mic the speaker close and off-axis (looks like this: http://www.harmonycentral.com/legacyfs/ ... 20axis.JPG ). The further you pull it back, the more you'll reduce the brightness. With close-mic technique it doesn't matter so much if it's on the floor. Try it with both the AT and the 57. See which one you like the sound of better. The one you like less could mic the back of the amp if you want, but you have to be sure you flip the phase on your mixer/pre-amp/software or you'll get cancellation.

Put it where it sounds best to your ear in the actual room. Adjust from there. I've mic'd Champs from the rear when that worked best, or mic'd them damn near from space.

You won't get Layla though, that was a tweed Champ and a totally different animal.

i have the little fender champ reissue, and i've always liked it the best with a condenser mic in the room, a couple feet away from it. we may not be going for the same sound, though... i tend to like more unconventional guitar sounds when recording, feeling like you're in the room and stuff. i'd say just try a bunch of things out.. i personally think it's kind of bullshit saying that there's a "right" way to mic a specific thing with a certain kind of microphone.
