Well, when they were still cheap and plentiful....a Technics SL-1200. I bought one right around the time they were being discontinued, used but mint, for around $300. I've since modded it quite a bit and it does well against my "better" TT's.

Can't help you too much on new production stuff :( The only one I bought new was a Marantz that was made by Clearaudio in Germany.

Alot of people seem happy with something like a Rega P3. Kind of an affordable reference standard. They come with a very good tonearm that's become OEM for alot of manufacturers. Can be found used. This might be the only one you'd ever need.
Music Hall and Project make some solid stuff in a decent range of prices.

In vintage stuff, A Thorens in the range of a TD-150 or 160 (I think those are the model numbers) are solid. A TD-125 is a classic. I have a TD-124 (it's older than me).

Unless you really feel the need for one, I'd personally stay away from an automatic TT.

A good website for turntables/vinyl........ www.audioasylum.com

I gave about 150 for my Technics SL-1600 mkII bout 5 years ago with a fresh cartridge and clean bill of health, the thing works great with a lot of run time on it. I'd feel comfortable with any of the older Technics TT's.

cheap direct drives ones are cool. u can find an old numark or stanton or something. some shit that dj's don't use alot or anymore (non technic 1200s) u can always get a nice cartridge for it if u are into that audiophile shit. and it won't break down on u and u won't need a belt or most likely a preamp as alot of them have one built in. so its just plug and play.

if u don't really care that much about all the fluff of a record player and just want to listen to records, an old vintage one is always a good way to go.

i think turntablelab and or audiophile something sells alot of nice turntables from moderate to very pricey

I have a 1969 Sony HP-155 Solid State Phonograph
(with built-in amplifier mind you) that somebody gave me.

That, I think, is the best turntable for the money (none).

I've got this:

What would be a good audio file stylus to get?

Shure 97mxe is a solid choice and typically available cheapest at Amazon. JICO in Japan makes an amazing replacement stylus if you wear the original out. An Audio-Technica in that price range would also be a good cart

i have one of the inexpensive audio technica ones, for the cost it is a good deal and looks nice. call it cheap, but i love blasting mahavishnu or aphex twin through it into my pop's old power amp and klipsch speakers.

I've got an NEC Authentic 7000FE from the early '70s. I know nothing about record players from this era.

Craigslist is great for turntables. I got an awesome 70's Pioneer with new belts, serviced, good needle for 80 bucks.

PROTIP: Do not buy a plastic turntable.
