friend of mine just told me about WCR pickups, their darkburst model supposedly nails the duane tone
please bless me with your insights on my uncool quest. thank you

I have a Seymour Duncan '59 and a Dimarzio 36th Anniversary in a guitar. Those are basically the only ones I've tried, since they sound like PAFs and I had no reason to continue looking. You could probably Allman the fuck out with them.

I haven't tried many PAF variants but I was hating my stock 57 Classics so I went searching a bit. Ended up with some Bare Knuckles. The Mule is one of their most popular humbuckers, a sort of refined PAF, sounds really nice. I went with the 4 conductor Abraxas in my LP Custom though, basically a hotter version of the Mule. I needed that extra output so it wouldn't sound thin with tons of volume loss when I utilized series/parallel or coil tap options and it worked out very nicely.

Before spending tgp $$$ on some boutique pickups, I'd suggest trying some normal pickups like SD 59's or Seth Lovers. Many, many people (including myself) have gotten by just fine with those pups

All the above options are good, soooooooooo many nice sounding pickups out there.
Another company I've recently heard good things about is Motor City Pickups. Good variety and prices aren't crazy.

Seymour Duncan 59 and Pearly Gates are good low cost options.
On the high end, people who are into that kind of thing seem to think Lollar is the most authentic.

I think Seymour Duncan made some kind of new solderless pickup system that's not expensive. I don't know anything about it but might be worth looking into as a low effort way of swapping.

Soldering for pickups isn't hard and is a good skill to pick up to help you maintain your gear. And you then get the ability to swap out pickups more easily and try a wider range of tones.
As for PAF I use the dimarzio paf7 and I just got the blaze 7 neck which I put in the bridge. It is supposed to be a bit beefier paf style. I know they are seven string pickups and probably not helpful for you but I like them so far. The seven string paf is a bit different then their 6 string though because it uses a ceramic magnet instead of the alnico in the six string.

i freaking love p90s, but i have a cheapo epiphone casino from 98 (peerless factory in korea) that i love
i think its dimarzio (?) that makes those 3 way switchable pickups - humbucker, single coil, p90
my friend got them, and the p90 mode didnt sound like p90s, it just sounded like crap
so yeah.... but anyway, humbuckers work so much better when trying to achieve the fake synth sound, they dont have that clippy thing going on. so i figured, hey if im gonna go humbuckers, im gonna go with my favorite humbucker tone OF ALL TIME, ever...which is duane's
or peter greene's, but i dont have a 335
now, i have been able to use a lot of compression and boost to make the p90 very friendly to the synth-y guitar pedals...but thats just not practical for the rest of the board unless im only doing a dedicated synth guitar tone...and i aint.

sorry for the unnecessary E at the end. i have been thinking about football and shonn greene
so uh yeah
he def used a 335 on the orig fleetwood mac stuff...i may be mistaken..maybe he also used a les paul...but that tone screams 335 to me..okay.

Peter Green def used a Les Paul Standard quite a bit. I've seen him alternate it with a Strat as well.
Anyway, Bare Knuckle released some pickups styled after his tone recently, the PG Blues Humbuckers. Even if you didn't wanna spend that kinda $$, you could check the specs and the EQ charts and compare to other available pickups. They're scatterwound with medium output. Also wired for the in between out-of-phase tone he's known for.
