I'm thinking of finally buying one. I need better drilling options than that are offered from mammoth and pedalpartsplus.

Was thinking of buying this one from Harbor Freight:

What do you guys use? Are any of you a hard ass, and use a hand drill?

Don't do what I just did  I got a cheap drill press without thinking my problem is though with a big 12mm bit to drill the DC jack I can't actually fit a pedal under it . (when drilling the op)

I ended up getting just a cordless drill it works really well actually and was pretty cheap. I haven't had any problems drilling accurately and I don't even use a centre punch or anything. Be careful though some don't have a big enough chuck to drill the DC jack unless you use a step bit or something.

That exact thing happened to me with the drill at my old school!

Do you print a layout and put it over the enclosure? When I try to free hand it, I just end up slipping all over the place.

I have a sears and a harbor freight across the street from each other and I got the craftsman bench top drill press for $20 more than the harbor freight bench top and I could not be happier. I am a huge fan of harbor freight but I am just not sold on their bigger tools. So in the long run I went with the Craftsman and it has a great warranty also. Just my experience.

I have a kawasaki but I could have and should have got the harbor freight for the same price. I can not drill a 1590BB when it is standing up the long way so I just use hand drill if that comes up.

I use the cheap one from Harbor Freight (though it's older. The new one looks nicer with them fancy handles and the light).

I played with a Skill at Lowes today. It didn't seem like a better machine as far as drilling, but it had the crank to raise the table (and the table was bigger, I think), and the drill stop mechanism is fantastic. And it has a laser, which... is a laser. But it's twice the price.

If you spend more, you can get a taller one that'll be less limited as far as what you can get under it goes. But I don't have any problems with up to 1590BBs with step bits. You could also find some shorter drill bits if you don't like step bits (but anyone that doesn't like step bits are incorrect).

I don't have a drill press. Part of me wants to get one, and part of me has been fine the past 4 years with just a hand drill and bits

I used to have access to one, I kind of miss it, but hand drill with a stepped bit has worked just fine since then.

I bought a cheap ass chinese one from amazon over christmas. It's great because its small and perfect for drilling pcbs. for enclosures it sucks. Fine for starter holes I just use a hand drill with a center punch and it's way easier for me.

I want one...never thought about having enough space under to drill. Let us know what you get so we can cosign.

Laowiz, hand drilling pcbs?! That must take your entire day away. If you're just making pedals then fine, but if you come home from work and do that, oh my!

Easy enough to do with smaller boards. Bigger boards aren't so fun. I'm trying to do a double sided PLL board on copper clad, that won't be fun.

This is the one I bought. With a gift certificate, of course. Makes to make noise for enclosures and is a pain for those but I think it's perfect for pcbs as it is pretty damn small. It is a piece of Chinese shit but perfect for boards as you don't need much power. Perfect for portability.

I just use a good cordless Bosch and step bits, it's been working alright for me.
