so, with all the technology and stuff available for recording and producing, you can make a studio grade album at home if youve got the cash.
well, i dont have the cash to even afford a decent interface. i have to record into my old boss smartmedia recorder (128mb's! woooooo!) then dump it into ableton and hope to god i can line up all the tracks. ITS HARD.
so while i was recording an idea with my phone, it struck me. why not record an ep entirely on my phone?
the built in recorder works fine, it sounds super lo-fi (thanks to my kitchen reverb) in a good way, and i just dump the single track into ableton, max sure its not shitty, then bam. done.
im calling the ep
Modern Man/Modern Machine and ill probably release it in the middle of july.
heres a sample:

That's a pretty song, Echo, and you have a nice voice.
For me, the tiny microphone in a mobile phone sounds way too horrible to use for anything, not like what lo-fi is normally applied to for me; brown noisey tape broken amp broken diaphragm mic low rez 90's digital etc.
For a whole album, you're looking at bad ear fatigue, worst case is a headache. For you, working with it, you are definitely looking at some bad stuff on your ears if you're producing your whole album with only those recordings.
The iphones does have mics that are usable in some situations, I've heard a few examples of people I know using them for stuff they've sold. But they're iphones. You could buy a nice setup with iphone money.

i'm currently jamming some garagey thpe stuff with a few guys and we've recorded some practices on an iPhone. Sounds nice and lo-fi to me! Would love to try do an ep or something in a similar fashion.

I have some friends making an ep this way and i know a dude who made a hip hop album this way (used apps to make the beats). I say go for it and see what happens! good luck!

Necessity is the mother of all invention...
If you have iOS, look into the Apogee accessories. They turn up used, fairly often on feebay.
There are enough apps available to have a self-contained ITB mobile studio.
But it's really about figuring out how to best use what you have. Glad it's working out.
Sounds way beyond decent...but I'm kind of a lofi and midfi buff......how are you recording it? (app/bit depth/sampling rate)

You've got a great voice, and that track is lovely! Interested to hear the rest of the EP.

That sounds so rad mang.
For some reason I catch a Sun Kil Moon vibe from that recording.

dang y'all, thanks!
as far as ear fatigue, ive totally been thinking about that. im keeping the ep short for that reason, and cuz i dont wanna waste all my good songs on an experiment. i'm also gonna do some mixing in ableton to make it less fatigue-y.
as far as how im recording it, im using the stock samsung voice recorder app. no settings changed, no extra apps, thats it. as bare bones as you can get with a cell phone haha.
its mostly a commentary (through music) on modern technology and how easy it is with minimal effort to release music that is listenable.
thank you guys a bunch for listening. im glad you think my voice is alright, i hate it!
