I saved up a decent amount of money. I'm bout to pull the trigger on a Squier Mascis Jazzy. Its features and praise make it the obvious choice. And brand spankin new, out the box sounds like a really good feeling. Ive only ever owned used guitars. Ive researched other guitars, considered a few (I really want a ibanez jet king=saving money) but the JM is calling me. I think $500($400 for the JM+shipping) on guitar is reasonable for me. I really need a better guitar, ive been playing a bullet for the past 6 months

Anyway. What would YOU buy if you had $500 to blow on a guitar?

G&L Asat Special Tribute ($499 on MF...or less if you buy used). The new squier stuff coming out is very solid too

If you're after an offset that Mascis def seems cool. I'd use whatever I had leftover to start upgrading hardware and possibly electronics. You could turn it into a very solid guitar without too much investment.

I'd be wary of getting guitars shipped without playing first, but having said that- I recently spent $560 on a Mascis Jazzy (stupid prices in Australia, that was actually a really good deal) and it is totally worth every cent.
I've upgraded the bridge and string tree but probably won't change anything else for quite a while, super solid guitar. The neck is PERFECT.

G&L Fiorano. I love my G&L and have wanted a second for a while. The shape isn't the craziest, but I've found Strat-ish guitars to be the most comfortable to play. Like a lot of guitars these days, it comes with a coil-tap.

Thats my issue too but the only instrument store here is extremely lacking in electrics. 100 acoustics and 200 ukes but only 15 elecs. So im gonna have to risk it. I know a good luthier/tech that used to work at the fujigen gakki factory in japan in the 60s and 70s so im not too worried if its not up to par on arrival.

You should be fine though, I've seen more QC issues with MIM Fenders than Squiers lately, and I don't think I've ever read a negative review on the J Mascis.

Well If I had $500 I would go straight for an Ampeg AMG1. A G&L would also be cool though.

I'd buy a Squier Jaguar and mod the shit out of it with the rest of the money

My bandmate bought one of the J Mascis jazzys, and it was unbelievably good straight outta the box. Having seen and heard it in action, I'd probably go with that or a comparable Squier.

I'd buy a Morrell lap steel or two (one of which would be an 8-string-Urgh, the gas). But since you asked about a regular guitar, I'd say get the Mascis. However, I like Agiles a lot, too.
