most AC30's come with speakers that can't reproduce bass well, or struggle and fry trying. would not recommend unless it's low volume and just screwing around.

I don't know anything about the speaker that comes in the AC30, but it would probably sound cool at low volumes. I use a Marshall JTM30 as my practice bass amp, and it sounds really good up to decently-loud-for-a-bedroom volume.
If you can disconnect the internal speaker and run the AC30 like a head to a cab with better speakers, I bet it would sound tits.

I know people used to do it in the 60s because back in the day there wasn't really a differentiation between bass and guitar amps or speakers
I think mccartney used to use one live on their early records or something?

That's not true, I know what you are saying but low end is not a post 60's invention... At very low volumes you can get away with Bass through a Guitar Amp but it has to do with frequencies and the pushing of air... You need crossovers and tweeters and ports for a Bass Amp to push Bass correctly...

When I had an AC30, the bass frequencies were not its strong point.
Like others have said
At bedroom volume it probably would sound ok
But at band levels it would be fart city

I've read that McCartney still uses an AC-30, in his case an early 90's Rose-Morris reissue with solid-state rectifier.
