Thoughts on crazy SG build

Hey guys,

This is my first post at I Love Fuzz and I am proud to be here! I will be sure to contribute to other areas of the forum so expect to hear more from me.

I was wondering if you guys could help me out with a guitar I am potentially trading for. I would like some insight and maybe some concerns that would come along with this and what I need to look for when I inspect the instrument.

It is a Gibson SG Custom 66 neck and a 68 melody Maker body. The ad claims that hey have been 'pro-joined' and that they both have been refinished in a daphne blue-like color. It is claimed to have two patent received pickups and a T top. I can identify the T top but I am not so sure about the patent received. I will be checking it out early next week I believe.

Also, does anyone have any experience with those shorty meastro vibratos? Are they horrible for tune stability?

Thanks for any help you people can offer me.

I've only played one SG with a Maestro vibrato, and it was not great for tuning stability. That guitar looks pretty cool. No idea on the asking price, really, but it does seem to be reasonably in the ballpark.

That thing is sweeeeeeeet but this is def a case for Dr Leaux Balle. If it has any actual value its probably $4-500 tops. Im not saying it isnt awesome i just wouldnt pay over $650 for it unless it absolutely blew me away.

^ this. Lyre's are fine with tuning stability as long as the nut is cut properly and you don't treat it like a Floyd.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am just having a bit of worry concerning the neck, making sure that it will stand the test of time

It depends on the quality of the join. It might be stronger than it originally was, it might not. If I were you, I'd be wary. Try to bring someone along who knows about guitars.

The asking price is higher than I'd comfortably pay. If you play it and love it, see if you can get more trade value on it.

imho, the vibrola is the second best trem system of all time--next to the jazzmaster/jaguar. as has been said--as long as the nut is cut right (doesn't have any hang ups--use lube), it's actually pretty awesome. i have ZERO tuning issues with mine.
