I have one

I've had it for some time, upgraded/going to upgrade a few details, but man... totally worth it
In direct comparison with a CP Jazzmaster (not soundwise), i'd say there's almost no point to paying way over twice as much for the fender
CP has a more comfy neck for me, but that's a thing that can be easily changed on the squier as well

bottom line - buy it!
the weakest point are the pickups, because they're wound very differently and way worse than they should ever be. That's why i'll be having my bridge pickup rewound so it has more body (read: "some" body)

a cheap option that should go a long way

Get one! I've heard you have to do some fiddling to get the rhythm circuit to fit a new pg but it would look so sick. Darkaxel is right about the bridge pickup though. I never use it by itself and am definitely going to have it rewound at some point. I can't imagine needing to do a full swap though cause the neck pickup sounds great.
Here's mine:

I had no complaints about the stock neck but this mim strat neck will always be on my number one. Plus I love the maple on it. Makes it even more ambiguous whether it's sonic blue or seafoam green haha.

I had one for a long while that I converted to a Baritone and I loved it. Swapped the pickguard out as well. I didn't have too many issues with the bridge pickup although I did play in the neck A LOT when I had it. Completely worth the money

I really didn't enjoy the VMs we had in my shop last years, especially the neck like mentioned above. BUT I would say that the J Mascis is my one and only guitar at the moment and I love it.

I have a j mascis and it's incredible for the money, especially the neck and pickups!
Changed the bridge and string tree for rollers but the stock ones arent bad
I can't believe just the pickguard costs upwards of $70 on eBay haha

The pickup is getting rewound this weekend, I'll absolutely let you guys know how it ends up
yeah, the neck pickup is awesome, that's why i'm only getting the bridge changed

I just to get more body into the sound

there's just too big of an EQ gap between the two for me
HotRats, love that maple neck! Sometimes I wonder whether I could pull of a maple neck, but with CAR, I'm really not sure, i feel it looks better on lighter coloured guitars

The Mascis is more specific and "set taste"
the VM is more like a blank canvas
both are totally worth it

i haven't played the CP. i had the opportunity Christmas before last to A/B a stock JMJM to one with Novaks and prefer the Squier "Duncans" though i can see why surf dudes would go for the Novaks.

I went Mascis on the Jazzmaster, the neck alone is worth the price of admission. Sounds good but PUs are a little hotter than standard Jazzmaster ones, which I'm AOK with. Hate, hate, hate the color and the pickguard but not changing a damn thing lest the magic evaporate.
Have the rest of the VM line though- Mustang and Jaguar. Jaguar was 100% serviceable and I liked the pickups out of the gate (replaced pickguard to get rid of 50s diner toilet seat look), Mustang is sadly and honestly better than my MIJ '69RI Mustang once the bridge was swapped for a proper Mustang one. Pickups have the whole Mustang vibe going on in spades, most of which I think is simply the right positioning and voicing more than anything else.
I'd get a Squier Jazz if I didn't have the offset stuff covered in a multitude of ways.
That said, there's no comparing the fit/finish/etc on my Classic Player Jag HH with the Sqyuers. They both play and sound decent but it's very apparent where the money went. The Sqyuers get most of my playing time though, even if in a perfect world they would have vintage truss access and no skunk stripe and a hair more time spent on polish.
