Man, I remember a day not too long ago, relatively speaking, when you just couldn't get an actual Fender offset unless you were coming with at least 1k. Minimum. Now days it's unreal, Fender eventually saw the light and produced offsets in every variation (most are foul but at least they're present) for really fair prices. There's some sacrifices on these newer designs but a few upgrades can get you pretty close, new guard/electronics/wiring scheme if you're after a different pickup configuration, all good for not too much investment at all.

Yeah, I'm really glad they woke up and realized they were really missing out on the real demand for offsets with their prices.
I've got a MIM Blacktop Jaguar that is still to this day the most comfortable guitar I've ever played that I scored used for like $320.
The new Squier models just rule for the price, great quality- and like you said, with a little bit of TLC you can have a NICE offset with great specs for nowhere near the price of what offsets used to go for.
I think the new Vintage Modified line was a GREAT move for Fender/Squier.
