My Hi-Tone 4x12 arrived today...

...and it is AWESOME!

Craftsmanship is absolutely stellar. Not a single flaw.

Only got a few minutes through it at lower cleanish volumes, but it sounded incredible. Night and day better than my '80's sterling hiwatt 2x12 with reeves vintage purples (which I've always felt was an amazing sounding cab itself) at the same settings. Still need to run it through the paces at higher volumes.

Anyhow, super happy and super stoked to crank this puppy up tomorrow.

o man. dimed it today for a good half hour--fucking excellent! i love that they have a process for breaking in the speakers before they ship out, no ice picks whatsoever. just nice sweet & crisp hi's--like biting into a honey crisp apple on a warm summer day.

Pewt!

They use their own Hi-Tone DR-F's. basically they're eminences that were cloned off of a particular set of Hiwatt Fanes that won the speaker shoot out at the Hiwatt convention. In other words, awesome speakers. Only available in their cabs though.

Quite honestly--I would recommend the Hi-tone cab over a vintage one with Fanes.

I've got a Hi-tone DR201 SAP on the way too:

is your cab front ported?

the 200 is a fantastic amp. are you getting 4XKT88 or 6XEL34
I have 4XKT88 in mine

for now i'm mostly running it into a Bergantino NV412
but I also have a Fane2X12 (with Studio 12L) rated 400watts
The Fane cab is quite a beast for it's small size, yet I worry about pushing the hiwatt full throttle into it (should I?)
I'm putting two EVM12L & two BlackShadows into an orange cab today, we'll see how those match up.

I have a quad of Weber 12L in my other orange cab - but to me they just sound like V30's, i don't know what gives with that. might just be the sound of the cab
talk to me! my search for a monster baritone cab rages on.

That's is amazing breau(x)--very cool!

I'm getting the SAP--which is 4xkt88, but basically has the jimmy page preamp w/ footswitch. It's got a lot more preamp gain on tap. Hi-tone is also making a clone of the standard DR201 kt88 version.

I'm told my cab is advertised at 300watts, but is closer to 400 in reality. But I'll be in the same boat as you--won't want to push it too hard. I'll probably pull 2 tubes and run it at half power a lot of the time.

Are the Gold Lion KT88s all they're cracked up to be? I read good things and they look sexy as fuck in terms of build quality but they're so goddamn costly. I read somewhere that they're relabled too but I seriously have no clue about all that, just wondering how they sound?

the guy I bought the amp from said he tried different KT88 but he'd have to retube every 6months (ouch!)
The GoldLion's were the ones that would last the longest, so I'm just gonna keep using those. When i bought the amp (in February) it needed a fresh tube job so I personally don't have anything to compare them to. his bias was also way out of spec (maybe that's why he went through tubes so easily) so i put in the MHuss bias mod (which is just a voltage doubler) and the amp can now be biased much more easily. But it's a beast of an amp - 720v plate voltage, & on the scope 210 clean watts + 340 watts dirty. my tech advised me against running it with only two tubes without a bias adjustment. it's a '72 btw. Love the tone but I'm afraid to gig with it - maybe that'll change if I get it a case.

Christ. Fifty Hiwatt watts will pummel as much as a lot of 100 watters. I'm very afraid.
