Soooo, I'm sure this thread has been done before but what pedals sound like NY? Particularly Cortez

I know the Durham Crazy Horse does the saggy kinda spitty sound, but $250 is stupid.

I figure any of those fender tweed clones would get you close.

Mini with the bias before noon, bass cut, treble boosted.
Probably.

depending on what era of Neil you're after, i've found the Distortion+ or the Velcroar into a distorted amp does the trick. the "Rust Never Sleeps" sound can be achieved via D+->reverb->Velcroar. you'll want some kind of down-octave thing as well that'll track with some degree of accuracy when you play e.g. the F/A-in-the-bass chords on "Into The Black." but nothing you do will sound right unless you run it through a small amp that runs on 6L6 or 6V6 power tubes. i prefer 6V6s which seem more soft-edged than the 6L6s.

i don't hear it on that.
also neil young uses a p90 in the bridge and a thunderbird mini-humbucker in the neck, so keep that in mind if you're really trying to get his sound.

I get as close as I cared to get with a Space Echo and a Blue Box into a HRD for "Rust Never Sleeps" mean stuff and "Dead Man". Blue Box mix around 2:30.

Yeah the mini gets in the ballpark. It's not really
the sound but it's good enough for me, add reverb and octave down for the crazy stuff. The most important thing is trying to play in his style; Neil Young would still sound like Neil Young if he played with different stuff. When I want to do Neil Young I just get a fuzz and play loud.

do you want like the exact tone?
the eau claire thunder isn't perfect but I find it captures the essence of his tone
