There was an Onion article (not satire, from their record review section) that hypothesized that Scott Weiland started doing heroin in order to get some artistic street cred. Even if that isn't actually factual, I feel the same way about Billy Corgan--who I suspect would've given his left nut to be in a band like Pavement or Dinosaur Jr or (and especially) Sonic Youth. Dude's always seemed like he wanted to be in a 'cool' band that 'cool' people get down with.
