What kind of instruments other than the usual, do you think would work well with doom/drone etc?
I think didgeridoo would be awesome. THeres this band that plays tubas,

I saw a dude use a didgeridoo for a drone/noise/ambient looping set and it was the most terrifying thing I've ever witnessed. He used a whammy to send the pitch down into subsonics and then threw a Buzz Box on top of it. Holy shit it was intense.

He runs seven1878 and his project is called Kingdom of Sharks. He's been doing performance pieces recently, but his Kingdom of Shark stuff is crazy. Not sure if he has used the didgeridoo on any of his recordings, although it's probably likely.

Hah, I actually absolutely 100% vetoed there being a didgeridoo on the Encircling Sea LP and I still stand by that decision. Only time I've put my foot down over something like that. It'd be cool to see someone do something interesting that wasn't jam band crap with it.

Good call dase, wouldn't work for you guys.
I'm gonna have to suss this drone didge.
There was a Brisbane band called From Whence it Come, they had a violin, horns (trombone, euphonium or tuba) as well as the standard band.
Guitarists used to stand in the audience and play, was fucking cool. Sounded huge.

Definitely this.
If I ever get another doom / drone band going on I really want it to be a three piece with 8 string guitar, percussion (not a standard drum kit, something like marching toms [quints] and skin head drums), and then bass + normal keys or cello / upright bass. If I can find a female singer / keyboard or cello player I'd be in heaven as I want to do three part vocals and really want some feminine timbre in there.
Oh as far as odd instruments that would be pretty sick, Sitar or other stringed middle eastern instruments that utilize a droning note.

YES.
It was in a dimly lit basement in the middle of the afternoon and it was the scariest thing I've ever heard in my life...
