I'm probably a late arriver to this genre and dont know alot but have started to really dig some of the bands I've found. I started at Russian Circles and just looked around. Here's a few I like, some are obvious but its just to get the ball rolling. Also, not sure if all categorize as post-rock or ambient or indie or something else but anyhoo -

Explosions in the Sky (Sort of goes without saying)
The Appleseed Cast
Moving Mountains
Caspian
Gates
Owel
Prawn
Charge Group (Aussie band who don't call themselves post rock but are worth checking out)

Anyone got recommendations? I dig bands who have added vocals (which is unusual) but instrumental is also cool. Love heavier music than this too so feel free to add anything that touches on ambient sounds to this list. Links and clips would be great too.

Mogwai, Isis, This Will Destroy You, Jesu, Red Sparrows, Tortoise, Godspeed You Black Emperor, also the newer Neurosis and Swans is kinda Postish even thought they've been around forever...

If you like Explosions in the Sky, definitely Mogwai and Jakob, I actually prefer them both to EITS. Also Red Sparowes is fucking amazing too.

Isis is fucking amazing if you like ambient/post-rock/melodic sections + crushing heaviness. Mostly the Oceanic, Panopticon and Wavering Radiant albums. Earlier than that is more straight up sludge.

First three bands I checked out - Jesu, This Will Destroy and Jakob all blew me away. Rolling on to more as I can.

As an Australian, the mention of the Dirty Three was very cool. I should have mentioned them myself. Really special and unique band.

No idea, they never did it for me. To add to that list, if you dig Isis check out Cult of Luna as well.
