Anyone ever used this for recording guitar cabs? Worth the price over a regular good ol' SM57? A relative is selling one for a dirt cheap

If it's dirt cheap, get it. Those mics are classics.

Yeah, just wondering if it's really THAT good especially when it's placed in front of my guitar speaker cab compared to the SM57 for recording

i have one and love it. if it's a good deal i doubt you'll be disappointed. 57s are just bread.

Pretty damned good on guitar amps. With a good preamp, also very good on vocals. There are worse mic clips, like on the MD-421.

if you're ever considering an re20, just get it... ESPECIALLY if it's on the cheap. they are just good. i sing through one pretty much exclusively . they need a healthy amount of gain, but nothing crazy. no proximity effect... ughgh i'm so down with the re20

Ah THAT clip  .. How flimsy is it to hold down that bigmic? Doesn't look so safe..

And is there anyone could identify this gigantic mic he's using? Plus his voice sounds good to my ears..

It does sound good, I'm guessing either vintage German or modern Boutique... HUGE!!!

Everything about the Re-20 that has been said I agree with. It's like a Sm-57 in the way that it can really be used on everything and it sounds good. One advantage to an Re-20 over a 57 is it's diaphragm is larger, so more bass. Sounds excellent on Kick Bass, although it's not my first choice, or even top 5, probably top ten. The Re-20 is famous for it's use in radio/broadcasting that and the Sm-7b are the go to mics for that stuff, both are great.

I also agree on the 421 clip statement, there really couldn't be a worse design. Although I see them all the time in live Zappa recordings.
