I'm interested in building one of those Beavis Boards, but as a noob, I'm unsure of anything. For example, I've never drilled through an enclosure. Are there templates for the breakout box in terms of where the holes need to be drilled? Any advice much appreciated.

I have not seen one, no. But...

Aluminum boxes are very easy to drill. 1. Mark the hole with a punch. 2. Pre-drill with a small drill bit. 3. Use step bit to achieve desired hole.

If you use something like a 1590B, you will have tons of room, and layout will not be much of an issue. A couple of holes on the side for jacks, a hole on the back for power, and a couple of holes for a switch and LED.

stick a breadboard on 1590DD and run some wires to the inside. drill it before you attach the breadboard so you don't get bits of metal in the there. breadboards usually have adhesive backed foam. be careful that the wires entering the box do not get cut on any sharp edges. use tape or a rubber grommet. I used hot glue.

+ jacks, power entry, footswitch, toggle switch, volume knob etc...



I have one switch wired like you would wire a footswitch for clean bypass. the other switch removes the volume knob. the volume knob is wired after the breadboard circuit.

Very necessary utility tool! Great for testing before you box your built circuits. I made mine in a simple radioshack plastic box, used alligator clips for the connections (9v,gnd,in,out). I didn't even wire a footswitch on mine at first. From there you can add a simple test oscillator and a probe for signal tracing when debugging.
There's a good video on drilling somewhere on the Guitarpcb forum. Barry shows how to approach it in a very easy manner, drilling out an enclosure by hand and no vice.
