All that bullshit art teachers feed you

I'm currently taking a 2D design class in college which we work with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. We're starting out with Illustrator, and we're doing basic line and shape compositions. Now one of the things he stresses is "symmetry is bad." This may be biased by my tendency to be the devils advocate but fuck that. I find symmetry very appealing sometimes, especially radial symmetry.
A year or so ago in high school I was obsessed with chalk pastels. I made all of these trippy designs, swirls and blurs. Anywho, i was practicing in different sections on a piece of paper to make up one composition. My art teacher comes up and goes "oh, this is very interesting, I could tell how you were feeling while you made each section." Honestly, i just wanted to make it look cool.... I really don't think art is about the artist, it's about the subject and the audience. People shouldn't care how I feel unless I painted "fuck you" on the canvas. i use my self expression so other people can express themselves, whether it relates to the original idea or not.
so how about we share those annoying art teacher (or just plain pet peeves) stories!

Well my art teacher seems to hate me,I don't exactly know why. It's probably because I'm terrible at art,or least doing what they tell me to do.I hate working with limits or a certain criteria. If they really want us to have fun and art class and be you know "creative" let me do what I wanna do.She better like the last assignment I handed in.We had to draw an album cover based off of its name so I drew Deep Purples Machine Head.It had a guy in a Deep Purple shirt with a robot/computer for a head that was plugged into a power outlet, and in the background there was purple smoke.I'll probably get a bad grade for it,but it would be nice to do good on it so I don't fail art.
She also called me a retard once.

Start asking her uncomfortable questions like "whats gonorrhea? " Kept me entertained.

Well once I asked her what makes people think that they are artists, just because the can splash paint on a canvas and sell it.She didn't answer, and then when she was talking about Jackson Pollock and abstract expressionism,I said,"oh so hes the asshole who started that crap."
She didn't find it as funny as I did.

I wanted to take a graphics design class next year, for my sophomore year but I have to take drawing and painting first so I opted not to.My friend told me its pretty fun except you cant really do anything that you want to do,once again. He also told me the teacher bitched him out for putting Charles Bronson with a gun on a dollar bill.

Haha, in sculpture class we were supposed to make a "religious" themed sculpture.... in the style of making a flat piece of clay with engravings on it. I had no clue what to do so i just drew a whale and wrote "jonah eats the whale".
It wasn't displayed
Oh and I went to a Catholic School.

I suck at all things related to art...but when I was in elementary school my art teacher used to sing smashing pumpkins songs while we worked...which is odd considering we were little kids but its how I discovered the band
I guess I can thank an art teacher for feeding me that.

In Sixth grade my art teacher verbally abused the class.
She also taught high school. And most importantly photography (MY subject.)
So I had to run away from art in high school (I took Digital Media with a different teacher, which re-enforced my hatred of photoshop. For me. I don't care if anyone else uses it.)
But now...in College...I am 2 semesters in and have skipped 3 photo classes. Going directly from Photo101 to Media Photo 2!
I won't stop til I get a gallery so I can invite her.

Thats cool, I'm majoring in photography as well. I kind of switched from graphic design, I felt I'd have a lot more fun being a photographer supporting my music. Plus I like the idea of serving subject as opposed to creating subjects.

That's cool.
I haven't grasped many reasons behind my work yet, I still have that point and click attitude, but I dig it.

I've actually liked all the art teachers I've had, but my current one always tells people why their art is bad and then she fixes it for them.

Isn't it ironic that they give you rules to follow for something that is supposed to totally creative and expessive?

I can totally understand limiting someone, look what The White Stripes have done. I think it should be done in balance, teach them some basic ways to do art, with limitations, then let them do a project using one of them at the end where they can do whatever they want.
