Custom Cabs?

Sometime i want to upgrade my cabs to something better and a bit cooler than what i have now. i'll need two 4x12's that will look awesome and on which i can have some input about how they are built and how they look. i don't have the time or some the other resources to build them as nice as i'd want right now myself. is it worth it for custom cabs? i've thought about just getting avatar cabs, since i'm not really sure any of the really fancy pants cabs are actually made any better. what should i look into? and here's the thing:

I WANT TOLEX!!!

there's a few reasons i'm not that interested in emperor, but i'm really not interested in any of these stained wood cabs that so many small companies are selling now. i've looked a lot into cab building and have done some modifications to cabs in the past to "upgrade" them. custom cabs are cool because of the level of choice in aesthetics and speakers, but i'm really not convinced that the construction is any better than decent commercial cabs, i.e. mesa or orange or whatever.

anyone worth looking into with decent prices?

It's funny but until you mentioned the "I WANT TOLEX" part I had a few ideas and then I came up kinda blank once Emperor, Verellen, and Mammoth had been quickly eliminated. Avatar cabs are pretty nice for the money from what I've heard but I've yet to try one out.

My buddy picked up a 2x12 from TRM recently and it's pretty awesome and the pricing is really fair. They make 'em with pine as opposed to birch and offer both a raw, tung oil covered finish or tolex options. Most of the pics on the website show off the bare wood design but my buddy got his in a black Matamp/Orange style tolex and it's looks sharp. Sounds fantastic too but I haven't had a chance to really get his amp singing through that cab just yet.

You can get 'em empty if you prefer or he'll load it with whatever speaker you decide on. Thinking dimensions are fully customizable as well. You should definitely have a look.....

Just remembered another, Lopoline Custom Cabs. Think it was Spaceflunky who had one built for his Ampeg and he loved it!

Also, hit T-rey up cuz he recently had a nice custom 2x12 built for his Ampeg GVT15H. :thumb:

Everything I hear about Avatar is really good and they're a touch more affordable than the competitors.

Plus, made in USA (based out of the beautiful Inland Empire), super helpful staff, and they'll take a fucking beating. I've been regularly abusing my 1x12 since getting it over two years ago, and it keeps on taking it every day.

I've had that black cab on top of my stack since day one and it's an Avatar. I got it for a couple hundred unloaded off CL. After awhile the back started flapping and farting out my sound. So I just drove a wood screw into the center post and it's been good as new ever since. My bottom cab is some 'EVH' thingy I got in an easy trade. Aaron is running some oldass Fender 4x12 and a Marshall one from the 80s. They're on their sides because they're both slants. All our cabs are ugly to look at and a joy to hear. I do not think there's much special about all the fancypants 'boutique' cabs going around these days. All they do is make them better to look at. And even then only for a minute unless you swaddle them in road cases or never leave the house.

I think Avatar is pretty awesome. They care about the sounds coming out of their cabs which is really, really nice.

I talked to Tim about recommendations for a cab to match some 12"s I have at home. Very easy to deal with guy, and pricing is VERY reasonable. I've had a bunch of woodworking friends look at his construction as it's detailed really nicely on his website and all have given it the thumbs up. Haven't pulled the trigger just yet, but I when I do it'll be with TRM.

I have two avatar cabs. I have a 2x12 Vintage cab and a staggered 4x10 that is the same size as the 2x12. The 2x12 is Marshall Bluesbreaker style.

Lots and lots of speaker choices or unloaded. Tons of tolex options. Dave at Avatar responds to emails pretty promptly. I've had nothing but good experiences over there. I really like how my cabs look. I haven't had the chance to crank 'em with anything other than my little 5w tube amp since I've moved into my new house but they're pretty rad and usually envy inducing. They're not emperors/mammoth/etc. But they're not aiming to hone in on that market. I'd love to have an emperor 4x12 to go with these someday but who knows.

There's my 2x12, this is pulled from the avatar facebook. Apparently they were really digging my color scheme.

For realz, that Avatar definitely looks good to go!

I was just looking over their prices and while the 2x12s aren't exactly cheap (maybe $30 less than an Emperor 2x12), their 4x12s are impossibly good deals. So many options too in terms of tolex/grill/speakers, seems hard to go wrong if you're after a 4x12 or full stacks setup....

Yeah 600 bucks for a custom 4x12 stocked with solid speakers? Fucking serious? I'm majorly tempted to get a Vintage 4x12 in that color combo right there because it looks hot.
