What's your favorite use for delay?

What really tickles you when you switch on a delay effect? Do you like oscillating fuzzy sounds from the depths? Do you do some U2 shiiiit? Tap tempo?!! Slapback? Do you use multiple delays for a washy noise? After fuzz? before fuzz? No fuzz -shudder- ?!!!!!!!!

!!!! Setting the delay on the threshold of oscillation but never quite oscillating? how do you do the thing you do with delay? What delay does it nicely?
I have been absolutely loving a short delay time and maximum repeats for that metallic zzzzzzzz you get when you hit a note. Also, of course mangles oscillations with a flanged fuzz is a favorite pasttime of mine - especially having a sandwich of fuzz->delay->fuzz->delay- - - - - -----> verb!

I like doing 2 things the most.
A simple surf slapback, roomy sound like Dead Kennedys.
And the super long stretched out echoes like PInk Floyd.
I am convinced that Albini had some sort of short delay with Big Black and Rapeman.
don't hear it at all in Shellac though.
I thought the best delay work I've heard was with Don Caballero's American Don.
Turns out the delays/loopers didn't work well in the studio (or something) , so they did all the parts no effects.
What a labour of love there.

Mmm...
Don't curr about tap tempo at all, really. I tend to keep the mix controls below unity, making the repeats quieter than the input signal so jank I play through it gets drawn out for a while. It's not a sustain thing, more like a murky layer of toans under everything else.
I don't ever really do the Edge-style staccato playing or the thing where you play a little passage, wait for it to be delayed, and play along to that.
My favorite way to run it is into a feedback loop, with the repeats time set anywhere from high to nearly oscillating; this way, when I engage the feedback loop it can either act as an infinite repeat switch or an instant oscillation switch.
Also, Disaster Transport Jr. all day. I fucked up an Echo Base build a while ago, but I really wanna try again. Two delays is nice.
Dirt - delay - dirt is the way to go.
All I ever really need is dirt and delay.

My favourite delays right now are the Clarinot
and the Particle.
one is great for the slapback gritty thing
other is just plain out to lunch.
I read somewhere somebody was quoting as referring to Delay Pedals to Sex and Pizza.
Even when they suck they still aren't too bad.
was that said HERE?
hahaha

Oh, and great thread, Delays are popular around ILF these days eh?
Giving fuzz a run for its money.
I have never once played a delay I didn't like.
I agree with above statements upon "dotted" delayed passages and tap tempo...blah blah
I know ppl love it and need it, not me....if its there great.
If not, im not gonna panic.
Am I missing out by putting all my delay after my dirt?

I'm a fan of multi-head/multi-tap stuff mostly. I want the interaction of delay on delay, set so that it fades into a wash of repeats but vanishes or sandwiches in on fast stuff.
Slapback I have little use for - if I want invisible delay, I can just use ducking stuff.
But realistically, there's delay and there's delay for me - either as a thickener or as "oh, that's delay, can't miss it"
I'm also fond of actual tape delay for the ability to overdrive the tape so the delay has more grit than the clean. I can do it with the patchbay and a pile of extra stuff, but it's so easy to do on the tape that it's criminal and I can do it mid-pass.
And sometimes I multitrack and play the delayed stuff as well, I learned to do it without multitracking years ago when I couldn't necessarily afford a pile of delays and it was ok to learn things and play pieces where I'd just play triple or quad notes with varying attack to net the same thing.
All of the above are present and in force here:

On guitar I like either a short slap-back sound or a noisy wash of tape delay goodness. On synth I like to use a short delay (so it stutters) and then crank up the repeats, making some pretty epic (and strange) sounds

Yes yes yes! Absolutely yes. You must try it to experience it. All the repeats get distorted and you can get a cool washy noise going. It's certainly worth a try. Sometimes when arranging pedals ill just do the complete reverse of the "normal" chain to see what weird sounds I can get and with dark fuzzy repeats of an almost oscillating delay - shit gets weird!!!!!
Skullydude recently modded me a dod dfX9. He installed pots for the trimpots for more control over the repeats and delay time. Also converted it to 9v friendly. When the repeat trimpot is cranked, the signal repeats a couple times getting louder only to completely distort and become wonderful static which you can play over. Then you can twist the delay knobs and control the frequency of the noise, not quite oscillation on this bad boy. a sort of sick and twisted noise blend of notes.
I also love playing a chord have it repeat fairly quickly and playing atonal stuff over the repeating chord.
Throw some delay in the feedback loop and creative a noise grove and oscillate away over the fuzzy drone.
If your guitar sounds good why not hear it over and over and over again! Boom!
Delay: shit gets weird

I love the below mix washy underneath sound
Volume swells with my rv3 which sounds kinda like whales
Intense modulation from my disaster transport or just subtle waves. Or no modulation and just pretty digital sounds pretending to be analog in a good way
And when I get my deluxe pitch pirate, i hope to make whacked out fucking garbly wobbly goop!
I love it all! Use my rainbow machine for some slightly out of tune slapback
If I put my disaster transport before my ssbs mini
Use the auto volume delay from my m9 it sounds amazing and harsh in all its evil goodness

You got the right idea, Cassavettes! Get weird with it.

Depends on my mood, but some favorites include:
-Setting the delay for slapback but with a really fast extreme vibrato on the repeats (when I slow it down with the looper I get this crazy rhythmic cello sound that's excellent for playing slow ambient delay sounds over the top of)
-running my memory man into the mini fuck with mediumish repeats. With the bias knob cranked it keeps the repeats from dying off very fast, so you can set the repeats fairly low and you get this fantastically responsive and noisy sound.
-Setting the repeats on my memory man to around 400ms, putting the depth to about 1 or two and the speed to about 9 or 10. Result: great haunted whale sounds with the repeats set fairly high and fiddling with my volume knob.
Really I just love making seasick delay sounds and running them into the mini. With the memory man and the cosmichorus I can get anything from a mild chorus to a hurricane of tidal warbles.

YES
I made a mode on my TimeFactor that literally infinitely repeats dark gritty tape echoes. I love it
