The Epic Drums Thread

I'd like to get a thread going that is all about questions and discussions about drums. We've got the drum pictures thread but somehow it seemed to be nice if that one could stay mostly pictures and that this thread could wander through the landscape that is drums in a more epic yet shambling manner. That it could contain multitudes of drum and drum related questions and comments along with drum photographs as people like.

Or maybe people will just ignore it.

Any way I have had a freakish compunction to try out double bass pedals even though I have never played them, not even in a store. :idk:

Any thoughts?

I used to be a drummer.... I still am but I used to too.

I used to have a huge Ludwig Bonham kit, one of the accent series. 26" kick, 16" converted rack tom, 18" floor tom, 14" brass snare. I miss it bad, now I just rock a 22" kick + 10 inch snare for making beats on.

Anyways, as far as the double pedal I highly recommend checking one out. If you haven't before it can spark creativity and help you progress as a drummer. They aren't just for metal drummers and can be real fun when accented correctly. Go for it!

I got a great question... Can I get a custom DW set for under 10K? That would be pretty fakkin sweet.

A seven piece maybe not, but a four or five piece probably... have you tried this link: http://www.dwdrums.com/kitbuilder/

And for the OP's question definitely look into a double bass. I'm not a metal drummer but the double bass pedal is good to spice up fills, etc.. It also helps to tighten up timing and stamina.

Definitely, but it'll still be a few thousand. Moreover, you can get more bang for your buck (with a higher drum quality too) with a different brand. If I was going to drop a few thousand my first looks would be Sonor (Delite's or SQ2's), Pearl (References or Masterworks), Yamaha (PHX or Absolutes), and Tama (Starclassic). The SQ2 and Masterworks can get INCREDIBLY customized, down to the number of plies, the wood(s) used in each shell, and the finish (as well as the type of pattern on the wood itself).

In my opinion, DW is single most overrated custom drum brand by far - it's not that the quality is bad, but for what they are selling, they are charging WAY more than the relative models the competition offers. It's mainly paying for the name and those beautiful finishes.

Before I became a guitar fanatic/pedalhead, drums were my life. I've had a few opportunities to sell my old kit for a newer, high-end kit, but I eventually stopped expanding my cymbal collection once I found the right ones (dem Meinl Byzance Extra Dry cymbals) and eventually I shifted my focus to the guitar. I'd still like to own a high-end kit one day, but it's a serious investment - and demo'ing a lot of these is impossible because of their price/custom-ness.
