Suggest to me a Triangle Muff derivative

Thought I found it with my Basic Audio Tri/Ram. I like it, a lot. But there's something about it, it gets a bit glitchy and crazy, when I push it, even when the fuzz is before noon. I know the bloom and flutter is inherent in the triangle, but it seems to be all gain/or nothing. Also, I want more volume, like a hoof or pharaoh has a ton of output. The Tri/Ram only gets there if I boost after it. Who makes one that preferably has a mids knob/switch and really can blast an amp? Skreddy? Who? Suggestions needed!!

Anybody know what the Musket is most like, Muff-wise? It certainly has plenty o' mids-shaping power.

I haven't personally used the Musket, but I've heard good things! Go on TalkBass and message Ron Now (Bongripper/CSTVT/Consent). I know he used it for a while but now uses a custom Twosome. He is endorsed by Blackout Effectors so I'm sure he can tell you everything you need to know!

Hell, you could probably just run a search on TB. I know many people on there have owned one.

No idea what kind of muff it is, but the musket is definitely good, I'm a big fan of mine. The mids knob is cool, lots of variation in the sound and a lot of mids available! It's also decently loud and the pregain control can do some nice things. <3 the musket. Unfortunately that's all I really know about muff derivatives.

I've heard that the musket is either based on the green Russian or Civil War muff. As far as triangle muffs go, there aren't many. Wren and cuff make one called the Tri Pi. I know MadeByMike would make you one, and I can't recommend him enough. He made me an IC Muff that I simply adore.

Musket is Russian muff territory. Unfortunately Triangle muffs are the one variation I have no experience with, so I'm not sure if you can dial that type of voicing in. If you can't do it with a Musket you probably have to go for something that clones it pretty specifically; Musket can cover a LOT of muff ground.
Not to get all TGP on you but the Stomp Under Foot muff seems like it might be another option, although I wonder if he stays pretty true to original design--which wouldn't give you the output you're after.
Kit Rae's muff site might have some good suggestions too.

Or you could get your info right here at ILF. It is home of the Blackout hosted forum after all. :thumb:

I haven't tried the Tri Pi but the PPB, Tall Font and Box of War are all really solid so I'm sure the Tri Pi is too.

Musket is derived from a green Russian and I've had one. It's break up is a little too much in the distortion area, and it doesn't have that vintage "bloom" like the early Triangles do. That's what in looking for. I've used the Tri-Pi, sound great, but no mids knob and not enough output (it's a straight vintage replica). What I really want is a builder's take on the Triangle sound (the unruly, blooming low end, and top end smoothness that sits undoubtedly in the fuzz side of fuzzstortion) with the modern anemnities that guys like EQD and BAT do for their Russian muff derivatives (mid control and massive volume output). It just seems that while there are plenty of muff clones and replicas of the Triangle, there seems to be less evolution and experimentation with that particular circuit in comparison to the Russian circuit.

Triangles and Rams Heads are interesting beasts. The Triangle is the clearest of them all, while the Ramshead has the most gain (but not the most low end)

Civil War Muffs have almost as much gain as a Rams Head in my opinion, they stack well, and have a decent amount of volume to them. This goes for Tall Font Sovteks as well since they are pretty much (2 cap swaps and a resistor) away from being a Civil War.

You could always have someone build you a Tri/Ram or Civil War/Tall Font with a SHO boost that is activated at the same time as the muff, so that on top of the Muff you have a straight clean boost to blow up your amp.

That actually sounds like a really great idea....

I'm wondering if your Basic Audio Tri/Ram might be defective?

I have that pedal, too, and was just playing it this morning through a Plexi-style amp. With the amp running either clean or dirty (say, a little higher than AC/DC level gain for the dirt) I get unity volume at between 7:30-8:00 on the volume knob --- and that's with the fuzz at around 9-10:00 in Tri mode. It goes on from there to ear-shattering output levels. I've owned the Hoof, Musket, Colossus, Pharaoh, most Skreddys, etc. and none of them were higher output than the Tri/Ram in my experience.

I also really love this pedal with the fuzz set low and have had no issues with it getting glitchy or crazy, even at higher fuzz levels. Great bloom and low end with this thing. Anyway, I don't know what sort of gear your using, so YMMV and all that. My comments were based on playing with a tele and a les paul into a Fargen Mini Plex.

that was my question: what kind of guitar/pickups?

He definitely posts more over there ;). Lately I've been here more. TB is getting boring. I mainly stick to the doom/stoner bassist thread.

Dude, everything you're describing is exactly what the BYOC Large Beaver Triangle is. I had one, and it was killer... I just never used anything but the "stock" Muff sound with scooped mids.

There's a four-way rotary: stock scooped mids, flat mids, mids boost, and tone off. I used all on guitar and bass, and they were all great.

While we're on the subject, I've just been after a Triangle Muff myself. As far as the clones, I'm really into the mid-range growl they have... much more interesting to me than the smoothness of any other Muff (though I do have an origianl V5 that is my favourite). I just bought a Stomp Under Foot Tri-Muff from a dude... looking forward to getting that. It's one of the earlier ones... #9.

Here's an old thread of mine from way back:

Thanks everyone for the insight.

I'm playing either a Jap JM with fender '62 reissue pups or a Fender Strat with Eric Johnson custom shop pups into a modded low input of a 100 watt JCM 800 with KT88s. Vintage 30s in a full stack. I'm going to reserve anymore judgement until I go back and play it again today because I just discovered my t1m buffer has been cutting my signal and is defective last night. BAN, I basically play it the same as you, lower gain, output around noon which gives me a decent boost over unity. My other pedals are set with more output (Hoof, Huge Box), so I believe they have been cutting through and not being choked out by the buffer. I remember a time where the tri/ram was more girth-y and clear and now I think it may just have been being choked out by that defective buffer.

Anyway, thank you everyone for the input, I want to try even more Tri muffs, so thanks for pointing me in some new directions.
