Gibson type guitars under 1200?

Love heavy, long sustaining Les Pauls and SGs, Firebirds, explorers, etc, but haven't played any newer gibsons that really felt at all good?

Most boutiquey builders seem to prefer Fender replicas or Fender type designs. For round about a grand, does anyone know of any makers building nice gibson style guitars? Or are used gibsons the only way to go?

Cheers - cb

Friend of mine just bought a really nice ESP LP type guitar for something like $400. But last I heard, especially in the US, Gibson prices have dropped and places like Sam Ash have been blowing out LPs, SGs, and Jnrs.
I even saw a Jnr the other day for $300 and change.

Dunno about those models, but if you want a nice 335 style guitar, the Schecter Corsair is a beauty.

Woah.
That's nice.

Also, I am keeping my eyes on this thread. I really want a les paul custom, but fuck you I'm not rich.
Interested to see what everyone says.

There's a nice looking Epi Elitist (MIJ) LP here
Here's a classic for $1250 asking price

No affiliation.

Some interesting stuff here.

Not so much looking for a 335 type of guitar (have a really nice Epiphone Sheraton already).

What about small guitar makers? Or do the handmade ones all have to upwards of 3,000 dollars?

I'd like to think it's possible someone makes a basic LP Jr from a chunk of nice reclaimed mahogany and doens't charge the earth. Or is that just hopelessly naive?

Wow, that LP classic is stunning. If I had the cash right now...

Anyone mention Hagstrom yet? They seem solid, priced well, would probably require hardware upgrades. Worth a look...

These Gibsons could be cool as well but that flat top isn't my favorite.

Gordon Smith!

Keep your eyes open though. I picked up a mongrel 59 Jr for quite little moneys. Nice old wood. It'd been routed for HBs and drilled for a tunomatic. Sounds great. Cost (and weighs) less than a current LP.

a few months ago I thought I wanted another Les Paul so I went around town playing a bunch of similar stuff. I didn't really like the new Gibsons. I ended up buying a '94 Explorer.

I do like the Schecter Solo 6 Custom and S-1 Custom though. the Custom-level guitars have real SD pickups with coil splitting.

I think the Vintage brand is pretty good for the price. but hard to google. people seem to adore Agile. and I think the Prestige LPs look good, but I haven't played any personally.

oh, and sometimes you can find used Heritage guitars for $1200 or less. those are great.

i'm seconding the Hagstroms

and in my own experience, old univox LP copies are the tits. I can get the perfect Sharrock tone, and they're usually under 5 hundo

not sure about sustain, but Gretsch electros sound and play amazing, especially for the price
